WEEKEND STORYLINES
• The new top-ranked team in the country, the Oklahoma Sooners, meet three opponents for five games in the Courtyard Marriott Tournament March 5-7 in Norman, with former Big 12 foe No. 18/17 Missouri highlighting the slate.
• Oklahoma will begin the weekend with a matchup against Sam Houston Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT before playing two games a piece Saturday and Sunday. OU will face Missouri at 12:30 p.m. Saturday prior to a 5:30 p.m. contest with ULM. The Sooners and Tigers will rematch Sunday at 12:30 p.m. before OU closes the tourney with Sam Houston Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
• Oklahoma's Saturday games will be shown on FOX Sports Oklahoma while the Sooners Friday and Sunday matchups will be streamed via SoonerSports.tv. OU play-by-play announcer Chris Plank and SoonerSports.tv announcer Chad McKee will handle the play-by-play with alums Destinee Martinez and Erin Miller sharing the color commentary throughout the weekend. All five games can also be heard on The Franchise 2 in Oklahoma, 1560 AM and 103.3 FM. Fans outside of Oklahoma can listen live on the TuneIn app.
• No public attendance will be permitted this weekend, with attendance being on a pass-list only basis. OU's remaining home games will operate at 25% capacity with 2020 season ticket holders and Sooner Club members receiving available tickets in priority order.
LAST TIME THEY MET
• Sam Houston: OU boasts a 10-7 series record over Sam Houston with the last matchup coming in Las Cruces, N.M., a 12-4 Sooner win. The teams have met just three times in Norman, with Oklahoma holding a 2-1 record. It's the first matchup at Marita Hynes Field between the Sooners and Bearkats since Feb. 22, 2004 (15-10, OU).
• Missouri: Old Big 12 foes OU and Missouri have met 93 times in program history, with OU holding a slim winning margin over the Tigers at 52-41. The Tigers hold the advantage in Norman with 20 wins to OU's 16. The teams last met in the 2018 NCAA Norman Regional with OU shutting out UM, 7-0.
• Louisiana Monroe: Oklahoma holds the all-time record over the Warhawks, 14-2, with a 3-0 margin in Norman. The teams last met in Las Cruces, N.M., in 2011, a 14-4 OU victory in five innings.
BIG BATS
• The Sooners pace the country in home runs to start the 2021 season, blasting an astronomical 44 round-trippers in 12 games that puts them in first by 11 home runs over Arkansas' 33. OU's 3.67 home run average per game also leads the NCAA DI along with its .492 team batting average.
• OU is averaging 14 runs per game and is outscoring opponents 168-16 on the season.
• Oklahoma holds the top two run single-game run totals of 2021 with 33 in its victory over New Mexico Feb. 27 and 29 in its season opener over UTEP.
• Senior utility player Jocelyn Alo leads the country with 10 home runs in OU's 12 games. The Hawaii native has hit a homer in 10 of OU's 12 games, including two grand slams.
• Alo continues to move up the program record book for career home runs. She currently holds third with 64 and is one blast away from tying Shelby Pendley's mark of 65. The NCAA HR record holder Lauren Chamberlain ranks first in program and NCAA history with 95.
• Nine Sooners have hit a home run already this season, with eight players blasting at least two.
• Three Sooners (Alo, Jennings, Lyons) rank in the top-10 in the NCAA for home runs on the 2021 season. Jennings and Lyons have hit seven a piece to Alo's nation-leading 10.
• Oklahoma has won by run rule in 10 of its 12 games with its only complete games coming at Houston (W, 5-3) and at No. 11/10 Arizona State (W, 5-3)
• Oklahoma set an NCAA single-game home run record with 13 in the season opener versus UTEP, a 29-0 (5 inn.) run-rule victory. The team tied the NCAA record for homers in an inning with five in the first and fifth innings of the game.
• Freshman Tiare Jennings and junior Grace Lyons tied the school record for home runs in a game with three a piece against the Miners in the season opener.
• Oklahoma registered a program-best 28 hits in its 33-4 victory over New Mexico on Feb. 27 in Phoenix.
SEVEN DEEP IN THE CIRCLE
• Not to be outshined by OU's hitters, the seven-deep Oklahoma pitching staff has put together a solid start to the season.
• The staff holds a 1.91 ERA and has allowed 16 runs in 12 games to start 2021 to go with 94 strikeouts and 34 hits allowed.
• Redshirt senior LHP Giselle Juarez paces OU with 30 strikeouts on the year in 20.0 IP to go with five wins, including a dominant performance in OU's top-15 matchup with Arizona State last weekend, striking out 10. Fellow redshirt senior Shannon Saile boasts 23 strikeouts in just 12.2 innings of work and two saves.
• Freshman Nicole May has impressed in her first season of collegiate competition, striking out 22 in 17.1 innings pitched and collecting four wins.
• Juarez, May and redshirt sophomore Brooke Vestal combined to throw a perfect game vs. Portland State on Feb. 28, Oklahoma's first combined perfect game since the 2019 NCAA Norman Regional, a 12-0 (5 inn.) OU victory over UMBC.
• Sophomores Olivia Rains (7.0), Macy McAdoo (4.1), Alanna Thiede (2.2) and Brooke Vestal (2.0) have all seen action for the Sooners.
NEW NO. 1
• OU overtook the top spot in the country in both the USA Today/NFCA Division I Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 after entering the season No. 4 in the preseason polls.
• The Sooners' No. 1 ranking in both polls marks the first time since the final week of the regular season in 2019 that OU has sat atop both polls.
• OU's No. 4 spot in the NFCA preseason poll marked the 11th straight year the Sooners have started in the NFCA's top 10, good for the nation's longest active streak. OU has been ranked in the top five eight of the past nine years, the most over that stretch.
• Overall, the Sooners rank third with 21 top-10 appearances in the NFCA preseason poll, trailing only Arizona (23) and UCLA (22).
• Oklahoma, Michigan, UCLA and Washington are the only programs to be ranked in every NFCA preseason poll, which dates back to 1995. OU also extended its streak of being ranked every week in the 27-year existence of the NFCA's poll.
• In the 2021 NFCA Preseason Poll, OU received 708 total points to rank No. 4 behind unanimous No. 1 UCLA (800), Washington (748) and Arizona (717). LSU (644) rounds out the top five, while Big 12 foe Texas (611) holds the No. 6 spot. Two other Big 12 schools make top 25 appearances with Oklahoma State (No. 11) and Baylor (No. 22).
• The Sooners received 420 points to also hold the No. 4 spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, UCLA took first at 492 with 19 of the 20 possible first-place votes, while Washington was second at 466 with the other first-place nod. Arizona (440) holds third and LSU (412) rounds out the top five.
• This marks the 14th straight season and 17th in the 19-year history of the ESPN.com/USA Today poll that Oklahoma is ranked in the preseason top 10.
TICKETING/MASK POLICY AT MARITA HYNES FIELD
• No public attendance will be permitted this weekend, with attendance being on a pass-list only basis.
• OU officials are continuing to work closely with leading medical and public health authorities to ensure they are making decisions that are in the best interest of student-athletes, stakeholders and the university. At this moment, OU is anticipating the seating capacity of Marita Hynes Stadium to be at approximately 25% for the 2021 season. Seating capacities are subject to change.
• With limited capacity and overwhelming demand, tickets will be made available to 2020 OU Softball season ticket holders and Sooner Club members in priority order. The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department will be contacting these groups with ticket options for the 2021 season.
• Digital ticketing will be implemented for 2021 to allow fans to seamlessly access or transfer tickets to others via the SoonerSports2Go app.
• Appropriate cloth or surgical-style masks that cover the nose and mouth completely will be required at all times while on campus and inside the OU Softball Complex.
• Other face coverings including clear face shields, gaiters/buffs, bandanas or masks with valves are not permitted.
• Masks may be removed temporarily only if necessary for eating and drinking while in the stadium.
