ATLANTA ā For the second consecutive year, an Oklahoma men's golfer is the individual champion of the East Lake Cup, with redshirt senior
Chris Gotterup claiming co-medalist honors Monday afternoon.
Gotterup follows
Patrick Welch's victory at the 2020 event, as the top-ranked Sooners finished fourth in the stroke-play portion of the event to earn a national title rematch with Pepperdine in Tuesday's match-play semifinal.
"It's no surprise that Chris fought it out at the top," head coach
Ryan Hybl said. "For him to make a putt on the final hole isn't surprising because he does that all the time at home. He's showing everyone around the country how good he really is and he will only continue to get better."
The Sooners (T3, +4) got off to a hot start at the seventh-annual event that hosts the nation's top-four teams, opening an early five-shot lead behind birdies from
Logan McAllister,
Stephen Campbell Jr. and
Drew Goodman, paired with an eagle from Gotterup.
ThatĀ lead would then be erased by a field that featured No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Arizona State and No. 9 Pepperdine, as OU's fellow national semifinalists made their march toward par. Locked in a battle with the field, McAllister birdied the 10th hole to get OU to even and tied for first, but a rigid back nine proved too much for the Sooners to overcome in the afternoon as the team finished tied with No. 2 Oklahoma State for third. Following a tiebreaker with the Cowboys, the Sooners are set to match up with Pepperdine, who claimed the top seed with a 283 (-5) on Monday.
Gotterup, who was named to the final fall watch list for the Haskins Award Monday morning, shined for the Crimson and Cream, signing for a clean round of golf with an eagle and two birdies to finish at 4-under, sharing the title with Arizona State's Preston Summerhays. The win marks the second of the Rutgers transfer's career and first as a Sooner.
"I played super solid today," Gotterup said. "It wasn't the flashiest round of all time, but it was mistake free. East Lake is really tough, and to be able to go bogey free is special. It feels great to win today, but that's not what I came to Oklahoma for. We're going back to square one and we're going to come out tomorrow as a team and try and get this thing done."Ā
Gotterup teed off on the final hole one back of Summerhays, but the Sun Devil missed a birdie putt leaving the door open for the Sooner. Gotterup found himself on the green with an 8-foot putt for birdie to secure co-medalist honors, which he sunk to claim the trophy.
"I knew what I had to do on 18, so I just went about it as aggressively as possible," Gotterup added. "I really wasn't too worried about the outcome, I just wanted that bird."
Next for OU on the leaderboard was redshirt freshman
Stephen Campbell Jr., who sunk two birdies and just one bogey on the day to grab a share of fifth. The top-five finish is the first of his career, besting his 10th-place placement at the Carmel Cup to open the year.
On Monday, McAllister, who joined Gotterup on the Haskins Watch List, fired a 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for 12th. The senior was in the hunt after his birdie on the par-4 10th, but a bogey and double bogey down the stretch dropped him just outside the top 10.
Jaxon Dowell and
Drew Goodman rounded out the OU lineup. Hybl will look to the redshirt freshman and true freshman, respectively, Tuesday in match play after the two combined for five wins at the Big 12 Match Play Championship earlier this fall.
The title rematch is set for 10:05 a.m. CT when Gotterup and Dylan Menante tee off the first tee at the par-72, 7,434-yard East Lake Golf Club. After that,
Stephen Campbell Jr. will be tasked with fending off All-American William Mouw, while
Jaxon Dowell draws Joey Vrzich. McAllister, who is 13-4-1 all-time in match play, meets Joe Highsmith, followed by Goodman and Derek Hitchner in the anchor match.
"Tomorrow's matchup is going to be a doozy," Hybl said. "We're going to need quality golf from everyone from the first tee time until the finish."
Live scoring will be available on Golfstat, with Golf Channel carrying live coverage starting at 2 p.m.
