NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's golf team debuted at No. 1 in the Golfstat poll, it was announced by the organization Thursday. The No. 1 selection makes the Sooners the unanimous top-ranked team in the country by Golfstat, Golfweek, Sagarin and the GCAA Coaches Poll.
The Sooners, who entered the year ranked seventh, ascended into the top spot after winning the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational and runner-up finishes in their other two stroke-play events.
"It's been a really solid fall for us," head coach
Ryan Hybl said. "This group is really growing and learning every single week to get better. We can't wait for East Lake and the challenges it will bring."
Led by the experienced duo of
Logan McAllister and
Chris Gotterup, who both rank inside the nation's top 25, OU has compiled a 33-2 record vs. other teams, with both losses coming to top-five teams. The senior pair has combined for four top-five finishes, and neither has finished outside the top 25 this year. McAllister won the season-opening Carmel Cup by winning a playoff, and Gotterup posted back-to-back third-place finishes at Colonial and Maridoe.
"This team is just so fun," McAllister said. "From the van rides, to team dinners, to the gas station stops, the chemistry we have is just so much better than any other team I've been part of. That type of environment makes it easy for young guys to fit in right away, and I think that's why we've seen Jaxon, Drew and Steve come in and immediately make an impact. I'm super excited about where we are at this point in the season and can't wait to keep pushing toward our ultimate goal."
The success of Hybl's younger players has been vital to the team's hot start. Redshirt freshman
Jaxon Dowell made his college debut at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational and finished tied for seventh. He then followed that performance by posting three wins at the Big 12 Match Play Championship and finished with a double-digit positive hole differential en route to a No. 28 individual ranking. True freshman
Drew Goodman has joined Dowell in the early success, finishing sixth at the Carmel Cup alongside redshirt freshman Stephen Campebell Jr., who grabbed 10th at the event.
After finishing as the national runner-up last season, the Sooners sent the veteran trio of
Jonathan Brightwell,
Quade Cummins and
Garett Reband to professional tours, but Hybl has been able to replace those experienced golfers with a new group that has proven they can compete at the same level. The Sooners have cemented themselves as one of the premier golf programs in the country, earning 23 top-three finishes in their last 24 regular-season tournaments and 40 top-three placements since 2017.
They'll be put to the test in their final event of the fall season, Oct. 25-27, when the Sooners head to Atlanta for the East Lake Cup. The nation's top four teams from the year prior all meet at the prestigious event that features one round of stroke play and then a bracket-style match-play finish. In 2020, Oklahoma defeated Texas in the semifinal at East Lake and fell to Pepperdine in the final. The 2021 event will once again feature the Sooners and Waves and welcome Oklahoma State and Arizona State too.
