October 11, 2021 | Men's Golf
HOCKLEY, TexasĀ ā ThreeĀ OU golfers went undefeated Monday as the top-seeded Sooners went 2-0 to open the Big 12 Match Play Championship, dispatching West Virginia and Kansas State.Ā
Chris Gotterup, Jaxon Dowell, Stephen Campbell Jr. and Logan McAllister combined to defeat their opponents by 27 holes across two matches, giving No. 1 Oklahoma six total points and a tie atop Pool A with Texas Tech. The Big 12's annual fall championship pits all 10 Big 12 men's golf teams against each other in a pool-play format, with the two highest point earners meeting in Wednesday afternoon'sĀ championship match.
"It was a great start to the week," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "It's always difficult to win matches and to get the momentum early on is very good for us. We had three guys go undefeated in Dowell, Gotterup and Campbell Jr. Tomorrow is going to be a big test for us because we know that Kansas team is tough, so it'll be a grind."
The Sooners opened the day with a 4-1-1 win over West Virginia. Gotterup got into the clubhouse first with a wire-to-wire 6&4 win over Olivier Menard, followed shortly after by a 4&3 victory from Stephen Campbell Jr. True freshman Drew Goodman added a 3&2 win, while redshirt freshman Jaxon Dowell took the 18th hole to secure a match-winning 1UP victory. Then, Logan McAllister halved his match, and Patrick Welch was downed 4&2. OU's +10 hole differential was second-best in the session, trailing Oklahoma State, who went +21 over seventh-seeded Baylor.
The afternoon session would bring even more success for Hybl's squad as it knocked off K-State in a convincing 4-1-1 result. Gotterup, Dowell and Campbell Jr. added their second victories of the day while Logan McAllister improved to 11-3-1 all-time in match play events with a 4&3 win. Ben Lorenz made his season debut and erased a late one-hole deficit to halve his match, while Goodman fell 2&1 to K-State's top-ranked player Tim Tillmanns. In the afternoon, the Sooners' four winners piled on the hole differential, winning by a combined 16Ā holes for a net of +14.Ā
The Sooners' +24 hole differential is second among all teams and leads Texas Tech in Pool A by six holes following two matches. Oklahoma will have to wait until Wednesday morning for its match with the Red Raiders and instead mustĀ turn its focus to a Tuesday-morning showdown with Kansas, who entered the week ranked No. 9 in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll and 13th in the GCAA Poll. The match with the Jayhawks will tee off at 8 a.m.Ā
Stephen Campbell Jr. and Chris Gotterup led the field in par-3 scoring on the individual front, finishing as the only two golfers under par. Tied for third in the same category were fellow Sooners Logan McAllister and Patrick Welch, who played the par-3 holes even. McAllister's 10 birdies on the day paced the Sooners as he went +4 in hole differential. Gotterup led the team in hole differential, beating his two opponents by 10 holes across the two matches.
The Big 12 Match Play Championship consists of three days of play at the par-71, 7,007-yard Golf Club at Houston Oaks, guaranteeing each team five matches throughout the week.
