FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team owns a four-stroke lead over second-place and No. 4 Texas after 36 holes Monday at the Big 12 Preview at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The 54-hole event, OU's first tournament of the fall season, features the entire Big 12 Conference and will determine the seeding for the Big 12 Match Play Championship later in the week.
The Sooners (-3) carded a 7-under-par 273 in the afternoon round after finishing the morning round at 4 over. Oklahoma, led by five Sooners inside the top 10, is the only team under par heading into Tuesday's final round.
OU registered six birdies over the first four holes of the second round to erase the Longhorns' lead, and head coach
Ryan Hybl's team didn't surrender its advantage the rest of the day.
"It was just really good to be able to get out and compete," Hybl said after the round. "Colonial is such a tough golf course and you have to be patient, so I was really proud of the guys today. We had the good vibes going. I thought Quade (Cummins) played really well when I was with him in the afternoon. He's one of the best players in the nation, and this is what he came back to OU for, to help us win championships."
Cummins carded the low round of the day when he shot a 4-under 66 in the afternoon to move into a tie atop the leaderboard. The All-American recorded five birdies in the second round after firing a 3-over 73 in the morning. Cummins is searching for his first collegiate victory and 25th career top-10 finish.
"I thought my rounds today were very similar. I hit it well for the most part, I just had more putts falling in that second round," Cummins said. "My group got into a groove and playing with teammates was fun, and it gave us an easy way to feed off each other's energy, which is different from most tournaments."
Patrick Welch used a field-high eight birdies to shoot even-par in both rounds and move into a tie for fifth place. Joining Welch in fifth is
Tucker Allen, who made his Oklahoma debut on Monday, firing rounds of 72 and 68.
All-American transfer
Jonathan Brightwell made his OU debut on Monday, too, and sits in a tie for ninth place after carding 70-71 to sit at 1 over. The Charlotte, N.C., product held the early lead after notching birdies on the first two holes of the tournament. He's tied with
Logan McAllister, who shot a 69 in the afternoon, to move back to 1 over after scoring a 71 in the opening round.
Thomas Johnson (+6) rounded out the Sooners' six-man lineup and is tied for 27th.
Heading into Tuesday's final round, Oklahoma holds a four-stroke lead over Texas (+1), which is followed by Kansas (+10) and Kansas State and Texas Tech, who are tied for fourth (+13). Cummins is locked in a tie atop the leaderboard with three others, with four more one shot off the lead.
"My expectations going into tomorrow are the same as the rest of the guys on the team - if we do our job then we'll win," Cummins said.
The first Sooner group will tee off at 9:24 a.m. CT on Tuesday for the event's final round. The final round will be scored live on Golfstat.com.
