Hurts, Gallimore Taken on Day Two of NFL Draft

April 24, 2020 | Football

NORMAN — One night after producing a pair of first-round NFL Draft picks, Oklahoma sent two more players to the next level when the Philadelphia Eagles selected Jalen Hurts with the 21st pick of the second round (53rd overall) and the Dallas Cowboys took Neville Gallimore with the 18th pick of the third round (82nd overall).

Both seniors, Hurts and Gallimore joined No. 17 and No. 23 overall picks CeeDee Lamb and Kenneth Murray, who were selected in Thursday's first round by the Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers, respectively.

Hurts and Gallimore give the Sooners 99 NFL Draft picks the last 20 years and make OU the only program to produce at least four draft selections in each of the last 13 seasons.

JALEN HURTS

Hurts is Oklahoma's third quarterback drafted in three years. OU is the only program to ever produce QB selections in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft in three consecutive years (Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray went No. 1 overall in 2018 and '19). In fact, no school had ever produced QB picks in the first five rounds of the NFL Draft in three straight seasons.

The Houston native totaled 9,477 passing yards and 80 passing touchdowns with a 65.1 completion percent in his four-year career between Alabama and OU. He also rushed 614 times for 3,274 yards and 43 scores.

In his only season at Oklahoma, the 6-1, 221-pound Hurts was the 2019 Heisman Trophy runner-up after accounting for 53 touchdowns. He threw for 3,851 yards and 32 TDs while rushing for 1,298 yards and 20 scores. He also caught a pass for a touchdown.

As a Sooner, Hurts led the nation last season in yards per pass attempt (11.3; FBS record is 11.6) and ranked second in passing efficiency rating (191.2; fourth best in school history), yards per completion (16.3), points responsible for per game (22.9) and touchdowns accounted for. He also ranked third in the country in total offense (367.8 ypg), sixth nationally in completion percentage (.697; third best in school history), seventh in rushing touchdowns (20 was the second most among QBs), eighth in passing yards and 11th in passing touchdowns. He averaged 275.1 passing yards and 92.7 rushing yards per contest.

Hurts compiled 5,149 yards of total offense in 2019 (3,851 passing, 1,298 rushing), good for the second-highest figure in OU history. He set OU single-season records for rushing yards by a quarterback and points scored by a QB (126). He also tied the school single-game record for rushing touchdowns by a QB (Jack Mildren also had 20 in 1971).

In 2019, Hurts also became the only FBS player since at least 1996 to post a passing efficiency rating of 245.0 or better five times in the same season (minimum 15 attempts) and the only player to do so more than three times.

NEVILLE GALLIMORE

The 6-2, 305-pound Gallimore is OU's first defensive tackle drafted since the Miami Dolphins picked Jordan Phillips in the second round (52nd overall) in 2015.

From Ottawa, Ontario, Gallimore started 38 of 52 career games at OU (all of his 27 contests the last two seasons) and finished with 148 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and five forced fumbles. He was a 2019 first-team All-Big 12 selection by the media after making 30 tackles and posting career highs of 7.5 TFLs and 4.0 sacks.

The second Canadian to play for Sooners (OL Josiah St. John in 2014 and '15), Gallimore was one of five finalists for the 2018 Jon Cornish Trophy, which is awarded to most outstanding Canadian player in NCAA football. He finished that season with a career-high 50 tackles as well as 5.5 TFLs and 3.0 sacks.

The 2020 NFL Draft will resume Saturday at 11 a.m. CT with rounds four through seven.
