The Year That Was: Track & Field

March 23, 2020 | Track and Field

Four Sooners were one day away from competing at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico when news broke that NCAA championships were to be canceled. The rest of the team was preparing for the beginning of the outdoor season, which was set to begin this weekend. Though our seasons came to an abrupt end, we are grateful that we were able to compete in all but one of our indoor competitions.

As we shift our focus to the health and safety of our nation, let's not forget about all we've accomplished. Here are a list of some of our favorite accomplishments from the 2019-20 indoor season.

Throughout the 2019-20 indoor season, the Sooners claimed 49 event titles throughout the course of seven meets.

The Sooners claimed 19 event victories at the J.D. Martin Invitational. The meet was the Sooners' lone home meet of the season, taking place Feb. 8, 2020 at the Mosier Indoor Facility.

The Sooners qualifed four squad members to the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Freshmen Lavinja Jurgens and Mikeisha Welcome, sophomore Kristo Simulasko and junior Essence Thomas were set to compete.

Throughout the indoor season, three Sooners downed three indoor school records. Mikeisha Welcome dropped the womens triple jump record at the first indoor meet of the season, leaping 43-9.75 (13.35m). Essence Thomas broke Welcome's record in the event later in the season, jumping 43-10.5 (13.37m) at the Tyson Invitational. Kristo Simulask set the new school record in the men's heptathlon, claiming 5,691 points at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.

Two Sooners walked away with Big 12 Championships titles. Senior Jackson Webb claimed the men's 60-meter dash event after clocking in at 6.69. Lavinja Jurgens earned the women's high jump title, clearing 5-11.5 (1.82m).

Essence Thomas earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors twice this season. Her first honor came after collecting two of the Sooners' seven event victories at the Vanderbilt Invitational. At the meet, Thomas recorded personal bests in the women's long jump (20-9; 6.32m) and the women's triple jump (43-2.25; 13.16m). Thomas' second award of the season came three weeks later, following the J.D. Martin Invitational. At the Sooners' home meet, the junior tooke home the triple jump crown with a 13.29-meter mark, breaking the meet record that was previously set in 2009.

Lavinja Jurgens was the second Sooner to be awarded Big 12 Outsanding Freshman during an indoor season. Hannah Cunliffe earned the honor in 2015.
