Rowing Returns with Scrimmage in OKC

February 28, 2020 | Rowing

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma rowing team returns to the water Saturday morning for their first action of the 2020 spring season. The Sooners will scrimmage Kansas State on the Oklahoma River beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.

Teams will launch at 8 a.m., with the scrimmage set to begin 30 minutes later. The scrimmage will be split into four consecutive sessions, alternating between varsity and novice races.

The Sooners rowed in four competitions in fall 2019. At the season-opening Head of the Oklahoma in OKC, the Sooners collected four top-five finishes on the day and capped the regatta with a second-place spot in the evening's night sprints 8+ grand final. The day was highlighted by a victory by Oklahoma's B boat in the collegiate 4+ competition

On Oct. 20, OU competed in split-squad action, sending rowers to both the Head of the Charles in Boston and the Jayhawk Jamboree in Lawrence, Kan. At the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta, OU had a strong showing from its varsity four boat, taking seventh place amongst a strong field of competitors. In Lawrence at the Jayhawk Jamboree, OU's boats placed fifth through eighth in the novice eight action, while the varsity eight placed sixth, finishing in 12:58.5, less than one second out of a top-five finish.

At Oklahoma's final fall regatta, the 38th annual Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., four Sooners' boats raced in the women's open 2-, with three of the four recording top-five finishes and the fourth coming in sixth place out of 15 boats. OU's varsity eight boats also posted two top-five finishes.

Saturday's scrimmage will be the Sooners only home competition of the spring. OU returns to the water next at the Pac-12 Challenge in Redwood Shores, Calif., on Saturday, March 28.
