NORMAN - Oklahoma dropped a Big 12 dual to No. 15 Northern Iowa, 25-13, at McCasland Field House on Saturday night. Four Sooners were victorious, but a pair of pins at 125 and 285 were too much for the team to overcome.
Christian Moody started on the mat at 125 for the Sooners, but was pinned by No. 14 Jay Schwarm 1:16 into the bout.
The first OU (3-5 overall, 1-4 Big 12) win of the night came from No. 16
Anthony Madrigal who earned his ninth ranked win of the season, defeating No. 23 Jack Skudlarczyk, 7-1. A pair of takedowns and a two-point nearfall put the 133-pounder over the top, improving to 6-2 in dual competition this season.
No. 7
Dom Demas was on the mat next for the Sooners, facing No. 14 Michael Blockhus at 141. The bout would head into the first sudden-victory period tied at 1-1. After a scoreless sudden-victory period, a Blockhus escape would put the Panthers (6-3 overall, 5-1 Big 12) up 2-1. Demas would then collect a takedown, followed by a four-point nearfall to go up 7-3, before finishing the match with a 9-3 decision to tie the dual at 6-6.
Redshirt-freshman
Jacob Butler would then suffer a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Northern Iowa's Max Thomsen, who entered the day ranked 10th in the country.
Taking the floor next was No. 20
Justin Thomas who controlled the bout with UNI's Paden Moore from starting to finish, collecting a major decision, 10-2, to give the Sooners a 10-9 lead at the intermission.
At 165, UNI would answer with a major decision of its own when Austin Yant earned a 10-0 win over
Elijah Joseph, giving the Panthers a lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
The bout at 174 featured a pair of top-10 wrestlers in OU's No. 10
Anthony Mantanona and UNI's No. 5 Bryce Steiert. Steiert took down Mantanona in the first, but the Palm Desert, Calif. native would earn an escape point. In the second frame, Steiert would add another takedown before finishing the match by earning a 7-2 decision over Mantanona. The loss moved Mantanona to 7-1 in dual action this year.
Darrien Roberts would face a tough task for the Sooners at 184, facing No. 4 Taylor Lujan. Roberts kept it close in the first period, trailing just 2-1 at the end of the first. But Lujan would take control over the following two periods, winning the match 9-3 and putting the Panthers up 19-10.
The final Sooner victory would come from No. 14
Jake Woodley who defeated Isaiah Patton at 197, earning a 5-2 decision after a pair of takedowns.
At heavyweight, No. 13 Carter Isley (UNI) would pin OU's
Collin McCoy to secure a 25-13 victory for the Big 12-leading UNI Panthers.
