Three Sooners to Tee Off at Palmer Cup

December 20, 2020 | Men's Golf

ORLANDO – A trio of Oklahoma men's golfers are set to represent Team USA this week at the Arnold Palmer Cup, which is held at Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge and features 48 of the world's best men's and women's amateur golfers in a Ryder cup-style event.

Quade Cummins, Garett Reband and Jonathan Brightwell all accepted invitations to play in the prestigious event that tees off on Monday morning. The Sooners are just the second team since the event's inaugural event in 1997 to place three golfers onto a single Palmer Cup squad, a feat that shows how head coach Ryan Hybl has turned the program into one of the nation's bests.

"It's incredible to think we have three guys playing in the Palmer Cup this year," Hybl said. "All three of them have worked so hard and the benefit of that work is the opportunity to represent the United States of America."

The tournament was originally scheduled for July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland but was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. Reband and Cummins received their invites in the spring of 2020 and Brightwell accepted his spot on the team earlier this month.

Golfers will compete on Monday in mixed fourball matches, followed by mixed foursome matches on Tuesday morning and more foursome matches that afternoon. Wednesday's final day of competition will feature head-to-head matches to determine who will hoist the trophy. Teams receive one point for each match won.

Cummins makes his second consecutive Palmer Cup appearance after winning his lone individual match last year. The 2020 Cup is just another notch in the Weatherford, Okla., product's career accolades as he is ranked inside the top 10 of the PGA Tour U rankings and is a Haskins Award watch list honoree in 2020.

Brightwell and Reband make their debuts in the Palmer Cup as both redshirt seniors are coming off All-American campaigns in 2019. Brightwell joined the Sooners after playing four seasons at UNC-Greensboro and Reband owns the Oklahoma record for scoring average vs. par.

"The Palmer Cup is a really cool event and it's an honor to be part of it," Brightwell said. "The legacy of Arnold Palmer is something that will only continue to grow because he was such an icon and legend as a man and as a golfer. This is my first time competing in a team event like this and I'm excited to represent Team USA and Arnold Palmer."

Team USA has won the event 12 times, but the Internationals will look to defend their title that they won in 2019.  The three Sooners competing follow in the footsteps of Brad Dalke who played in the 2018 event, and head coach Ryan Hybl who coached Team USA to a win the same year.

Live scoring can be found on GolfStat. The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at Bay Hill in 1997. The Cup is supported by Arnie's Army Charitable Foundation and provides a platform for perpetuating Arnold Palmer's commitment to youth development and the growth of amateur and collegiate golf.
