NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team returns to Norman for a matchup vs. the No. 6 West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday night at John Crain Field. The match is set for a 7 p.m. CT kick and will air on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
"Obviously, there was disappointment with the result last week, but the greatest thing is that another game comes quickly and if you want to play, you want to play against the best," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "We're excited to face West Virginia, we know how talented of a team they are and right now they're at the top of the Big 12.
"It's a chance for us to compete and it's an opportunity to respond. It's about intensity, attitude, effort and willingness to commit. I'm looking forward to what we bring tomorrow night and it's important that we take the next step after last week.
Friday's match will serve as OU's annual "Pink Game" to bring awareness to those fighting breast cancer. OU is coming off a 0-3 loss to Kansas State in Manhattan while the Mountaineers come to Norman off a 2-1 victory over Baylor in Morgantown last Friday.
The teams last met Oct. 20, 2019, a 1-0 Mountaineer victory in Morgantown. The Sooners saw plenty of opportunities in the match with nine shots, two a piece from current senior Erika Yost, junior Megan Reilly and sophomore Jordan Lund. Senior Nikki Panas recorded four saves in the game.
OU looks to bounce back following a 0-3 defeat in Manhattan, Kan., last Friday versus Kansas State. The Sooners held the advantage in shots by a count of 11-6 and corners, 7-4, but couldn't find the back of the net in the contest. Junior Bri Amos led OU with three looks while sophomore Sakura Yoshida had a pair of chances and junior Cameron Tharp and freshman Cailey England each had one shot. Additionally, junior Lauren Tovy recorded her second shot of the year, coming off the bench to play 82 minutes.
OU's squad has spread the wealth in terms of shots in 2020, averaging 12.5 shots per game. 13 Sooners have taken a shot this season, with nine Sooners registering shots on goal. Senior Reagan Glisson leads all Sooners with nine shots and three on goal in the season, with fellow transfer Bri Amos right behind her with seven looks this season and two being on goal. Freshman Cailey England has also seen two shots on goal to go with six shots.
Carr's squad has seen contributions from freshmen and veterans alike. Freshman Cailey England has started all four matches for the Sooners. Fellow true freshmen CeCe Cross and Abby Mitchell have also provided sparks off the bench for OU.
Returning senior Yuuka Kurosaki registered her first goal of the season vs. Texas Tech (10/2) in her first action of 2020. Senior Erika Yost and junior Megan Reilly have also been proven ... contributors for OU, combining for seven shots on the year. Leading the sophomores on the pitch has been Maya McCutcheon with five looks and one on goal.
The Sooners host No. 5 TCU at John Crain Field next Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. CT. The match will serve as Senior Night for OU's six seniors: Reagan Glisson, Yuuka Kurosaki, Emma Ledbetter, Lauren Haivala, Nikki Panas and Erika Yost.
