OU Edged by No. 6 WVU

October 23, 2020 | Soccer

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team dropped a tight match to No. 6 West Virginia Friday, 1-0, on a chilly evening in Norman.

"Tonight was a step in the right direction," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "I'm really proud of our team. I think we controlled the game for long periods. I think once we got out of the first 20 minutes, we controlled the defensive end when West Virginia had the ball. We started to grow in the game and got some confidence and we had some really good chances at the end.

"I'm just really proud of our team and this was a positive step but it means nothing if we don't take it to the next level following this performance, and that's what I said to the team."

The Sooners held their own against the Mountaineers, who hold the top spot in the conference standings. West Virginia narrowly edged OU in shots, 12-8. The game was competitive throughout with OU committing 12 fouls to the Mountaineers 10.

West Virginia scored the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute with Alina Stahl capitalizing off a deflection in the box.

The Sooners responded with three looks to end the first 45, a pair from senior Reagan Glisson and one from freshman Abby Mitchell, her first shot of the season.

In the second half, the pace of the contest picked up with OU recording five shots and the Mountaineers getting seven looks.

The Sooners were on the attack between the 65th and 71st minute, getting four looks, two of which were on goal. Yoshida had a pair of looks from outside the 18 box while junior Olivia Odle took her first shot of the season off a header that went high.

A defensive battle ensued to finish the match with OU getting one more opportunity in the 90th minute from senior Erika Yost but the shot was saved by WVU's goalkeeper to end the contest.

Yoshida and Glisson led OU with two shots on the night, each recording one on goal. Mitchell, Odle, Yost and senior Yuuka Kurosaki all had one look a piece. Senior Nikki Panas registered seven saves in goal for the Sooners.

Oklahoma returns to action next Friday night for a match against No. 5 TCU in Norman. Kick is set for 7 p.m. CT and can be seen on a subscription basis via SoonerSports.TV.
