October 18, 2020 | Men's Golf

CARROLLTON, Texas – The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team completed the opening round of play at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational on MondayĀ by firing a 23-over, 311, to hold a share of eighth heading into the second round of the 54-hole event.

The event, held annually at the par-72, 7,521-yard Maridoe Golf Club, features a majority of Big 12 teams and four other programs. With 36 holes of golf left, Oklahoma sits seven strokes outside of the top fiveĀ and will have a chance to move up the leaderboard with a strong round on Monday.

Redshirt senior Thomas Johnson went to Maridoe as an individual competitor, firing a team-low 73 (+1) to grab a piece of seventh heading into Monday. Freshman Ben Lorenz made his Oklahoma debut as an individual but wasn't able to finish his round before play was stopped due to darkness. The freshman was 2-over thru 16 when play was stoppedĀ and is tied for 10th.

Logan McAllister paced the Sooners on Sunday afternoon, carding a 76 (+4). The junior collected four birdies on day oneĀ and is tied for 22ndĀ heading into Monday, just three strokes outside of the top 10. McAllister has had a breakout fall for Oklahoma, claiming medalist honors at the Big 12 Colonial Preview in September and amassing a perfect 5-0 record at the Big 12 Match Play Championship.

Two strokes off McAllister was Jonathan Brightwell, who shot a 78 (+6) to open the event. He shares 33rdĀ with teammate Riley Casey, who is making his first appearance in the Oklahoma lineup since 2018.

Rounding out the Sooners' lineup was Quade Cummins and Patrick Welch who both carded 79s (+7)Ā to hold shares of 41st.Ā

The No. 10-ranked Baylor Bears (299, +11) hold the team lead after 18 holes.

The Sooners will resume play on Monday morning from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. in the second round of the event.Ā
