NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team dropped its road match Friday night at Kansas State by a score of 0-3.
"We're disappointed in the result and there's a lot of sad faces but we're not going to get anywhere feeling sorry for ourselves," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "We have to grind our way out of this together. This week we talked about being creative in attacking and we saw that for some long periods tonight and being able to control the ball.
"The three goals that Kansas State scored, two were off counter-attacks and one corner kick. When you're being aggressive on the attack you have to take care of business in the back and we didn't do that. It didn't help that we were down a starter following an injury in warmups."
The Wildcats (1-4) went ahead early off an executed corner kick headed in by Shae Turner in the third minute. OU (0-3-1) responded with a look on goal from senior Reagan Glisson in the seventh minute before KSU added another goal in the 22nd minute by Kyler Goins. OU saw two more opportunities to close out the first 45 from freshmen Cailey England and CeCe Cross but couldn't find the back of the net.
OU came out in the second half with a flurry of shots on goal, two from sophomore Sakura Yoshida and one from junior Lauren Tovy, marking Tovy's second shot on goal of the season. The junior showed plenty of fight for OU, going 82 minutes off the bench.
Kansas State built on their lead in the 66th minute with a converted PK from Brookelyn Entz following a handball in the box.
The Sooners recorded five shots to KSU's one in the final 24 minutes, with three looks coming from junior Bri Amos and one a piece from senior Erika Yost and junior Cameron Tharp. Tharp's header just sailed over the bar off a corner from Yoshida.
OU finished with the advantage in shots, 11-6, and corner kicks by a count of 7–4. The teams each recorded four looks on goal in the match. Senior keeper Nikki Panas registered one save on the night. Sophomore Jordan Lund was replaced in the starting lineup following an injury sustained in warmups.
"This is the the process. It's not going to be one week. Our confidence is going to come from training. It's about getting back to work and improving ourselves," concluded Carr. "Character is going to be a big part in how we respond. I have no doubt that these kids are going to continue to work and improve.
"We just have to continue to get better and grind our way out."
Oklahoma returns to action next Friday night for a match against No. 7 West Virginia in Norman. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. CT and can be seen on FOX Sports Oklahoma.
