OU Resumes Dual Slate at Ohio

January 04, 2020 | Wrestling

NORMAN - No. 20/NR/23 Oklahoma (1-2, 0-1 Big 12) hits the road to square off with the Ohio Bobcats (2-3, 0-1 MAC)Ā in a non-conference dual Sunday at 2 p.m. CT at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.Ā

Last Time Out

The Sooners sent a mostlyĀ young lineup to gain experience atĀ last weekend's loaded Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill.Ā

Redshirt freshman Jacob Butler (149) was one of two Sooners (Jake Boyd; 197) to pick up three victories on the weekend. Butler's trio of wins included an upset of then-No. 22 Alec Hagan of Ohio. Back on Nov. 2, 2019, Butler and Hagan also squared off at the season-opening Michigan State Open, where Hagan claimed a 2-0 decision.Ā The pair will likely face off for the third time this season in a 149-pound rematch on Sunday.

Prior to the Midlands Championships, Oklahoma dropped its most recent dual meet, 23-9, to No. 14 Oklahoma State. Sooners Dom DemasĀ (141), Justin Thomas (157) and Anthony MantanonaĀ (174) each won their matches in the dual.Ā

Sooners in the Rankings

OU enters the weekend with six Sooners ranked in at least one of three major ranking services: FloWrestling, InterMat and Trackwrestling.Ā Dom Demas is ranked third at 141 by Flo, while InterMat and Trackwrestling ranked the reigning Big 12 champion fourth. Jake Woodley sits at ninth in the Flo and Track rankings, and 11th in Intermat's. In addition to Demas and Woodley, another pair of Sooners finds itself in each poll's top 20: No. 11/20/19Ā Anthony MantanonaĀ (174) and No. 18/19/19Ā Justin Thomas (157).
At 133, Anthony MadrigalĀ sits at No. 16/19/22. Christian Moody is ranked No. 31 by TrackwrestlingĀ at 125.

As a team, Oklahoma is ranked No. 20Ā by Flo and No. 23Ā by Trackwrestling.

Scouting the Bobcats

Ohio enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record and 0-1 in MAC competition. In its most recent dual, Ohio topped Sooners' Big 12 foe West Virginia, 20-13. Ohio claimed six of the ten matches, earning bonus points for major decisions in two matches.Ā

The Bobcats will send No. 21 Shakur Laney to the mat at 141 pounds for a top-25 matchup with Oklahoma's No. 3 Dom Demas. No. 23 Alec Hagan (149) is the only other ranked Bobcat, according to FloWrestling.Ā
