NORMAN – The No. 22 Oklahoma men's tennis team opened the 2020 season with a 7-0 sweep of Abilene Christian Saturday. OU is now 4-0 in season openers under head coach
Nick Crowell and has shut out its opponent in each of those matches.
"The guys came ready to play from the start today," said Crowell. "I liked the intensity in the double and all three teams took care of business early and we built confidence throughout the day. It was good to win all seven points. We have to have that mentality every day that we just aren't going to give up anything."
OU came out firing in doubles, winning all three courts by a score of 6-1. At the No. 2 line, the sophomore duo of
Mason Beiler and
Max Stewart topped Wildcats Akinori Wada and Riley Tran to get things started.
Jochen Bertsch and
Mark Mandlik clinched the opening point with a victory over Savan Chhabra and Dimitrios Azoidis on court three, and
Stefano Tsorotiotis and
Jake Van Emburgh closed out Jackson Fine and Jonathan Sheehy just seconds later at the top spot.
In singles, freshman Mandlik was the first Sooner off the court with a 6-3, 6-0 rout of Wada on court five for his first dual-match win as a Sooner.
OU's No. 116 Bertsch was next on court four, giving up just three games to take out Fine 6-2, 6-1 and boost OU to 3-0 in the contest. Tsorotiotis clinched the match at the No. 3 spot as he rolled past the Wildcats' Tran 6-2, 6-2.
No. 50 Beiler tacked on an extra win with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of ACU's Azoidis on court two and Van Emburgh held on to upset No. 77 Sheehy in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 [3] at the No. 1 line.
Newcomer
Alex Martinez completed the sweep in a comeback victory over Chhabra on court six. After dropping the first set 6-2, Martinez powered through a second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (4) and won a 10-point decision 1-0 [9] for his first win in the Crimson and Cream.
