OU Falls to No. 18 Tennessee

NORMAN – The No. 22 Oklahoma men's tennis team took No. 18 Tennessee to the wire Sunday, but narrowly fell to the Volunteers 4-3 at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
With the loss, OU moves to 1-1 on the year while Tennessee improves to 2-0.
The Sooners gave up the doubles point, but battled back in singles to bring the match down to the final contest.
In doubles, OU's Mark Mandlik and Jochen Bertsch fell to Giles Hussey and Scott Jones 6-1 on court three and Max Stewart and Mason Beiler were defeated by Adam Walton and Martim Prata 6-3. When the point was clinched, Jake Van Emburgh and Stefano Tsorotiotis were locked in at 5-3, 40-all on court one with Tennessee's Pat Harper and Andrew Rogers.
In singles, freshman Justin Schlageter battled to win his first match as a Sooner, overcoming a 5-3 deficit in the first set to take it. The newcomer reeled off four straight games to claim the opener, then took set two 6-3 and put the Sooners on the board.
No. 50 Beiler took out Scott Jones, 6-3, 6-4, to tie the match at 2-all.
Tennessee regained the lead when the Vols' No. 23 Walton topped OU's Jake Van Emburgh 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Mandlik came up with a clutch three-set victory on court four to tie the match again at 3-3 and keep OU in the contest. After dropping the first set to Tennessee's Prata in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4), Mandlik claimed the next two sets 6-4, 6-4.
The Vols took the match when Luca Widenmann defeated OU's Bertsch, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. After giving up the first frame, No. 116 Bertsch staved off three match points in the second set to claim it and force a third. The final set was tied at 3-all before Widenmann ran away with it.
