Sooners Stay Perfect in Indiana

September 06, 2019 | Volleyball

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Crimson and Cream rose to the top Friday night as the Oklahoma volleyball team outlasted Indiana in the final match of the Hoosier Classic. The Sooners battled for their third five-set win of the tournament, defeating Indiana 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-12.

With the victory, OU improves to 4-2 on the season.

"We showed great mental toughness to stay competitive in every set this weekend and willed ourselves to three wins," said head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton. "There was consistency in our serve-pass game which allowed for us to play both sides of the ball at a high level. OVerall, I'm really proud of the entire team in their effort and engagement. We're excited to be back in Norman for the home opener next Friday!"

Sarah Maras hit the game-winner for the second straight match to cap her second double-digit kills performance of the day. Against Indiana, Maras led the Sooners in kills with 17, just one shot shy of the career-high she set against Yale earlier in the day.

Three more Sooners added kills in double figures. Paige Anderson contributed 11 on a .318 clip, while Brianna Kadiku registered 12 kills. Sarah Sanders blasted 12 and posted 6 of OU's 11 blocks in the contest.

Setter Kylee McLaughlin had her second double-double of the day, this time dishing out 51 assists to go with 19 digs. The junior went on the attack with four kills on five attempts for an .800 clip.

Keyton Kinley paced the defense with a match-high 30 digs and even added a kill of her own in the first set. The OU back row tallied 83 digs to IU's 76.
OU outkilled Indiana 63-51 and held the Hoosiers to a .126 attack percentage while swinging .173.

OU used a 3-0 run to seal the first set 25-22. With the frame tied at 22, an Indiana error gave the Sooners the sideout. Sanders put up a solo block to bring up set point, then teamed up with Anderson to deny another IU attack and end the set.

The Hoosiers won set two 25-23 and set three 25-22, but OU roared back in the fourth set to win it 25-14. The Sooners capitalized on 10 Indiana errors and held the Hoosiers to a -.121 hitting percentage in the frame.

In the deciding set, OU jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Indiana closed the gap and tied it at 5-all. Anderson reeled off her 10th kill of the night to break the tie and the Sooners maintained the lead the rest of the set. McLaughlin registered her fourth kill to bring up match point at 14-11. Indiana would score once more, but Maras again called match and put the game away for the Sooners.
