NORMANĀ ā The Oklahoma volleyball team grabbed a five-set win over Arizona State Friday night to notch a 3-2 win in its home opener.
The Sooners (5-2) held off Arizona State (5-3) 22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 12-25, 15-12 inside McCasland Field House for their fourth consecutive five-set victory.
"Sometimes you just have to find a way," said head coach
Lindsey Gray-Walton. "That's the beauty of volleyball, you can get blown out 25 to 9 and you've got to be able to mentally re-coop, flush it and get back to the topic at hand. In that moment, you never try and let that point get more or weigh more on them or the next. This team has done a really nice job every time they get pushed to five sets, and all of this year so far, they've been playing hard for every point".
OU racked up 64 kills in the match and swung .163 while holding Arizona State to .143 on 50 kills. Four Sooners had kills in double digits;
Sarah Sanders led with 16 blasts on a .314 clip;
Brianna Kadiku had 13 kills while swinnging .423;
Ashlynn Dunbar added 11 shots, and
Paige Anderson had 10.Ā
Defensively,
Paige Johnson led the Sooners in digs with 26, while
Keyton Kinley chipped in 20. OU put up 11 blocks in the contest, with nine of those from Kadiku.
"We talk a lot about taking pride in those three parts of the game and we need to smother teams when they come in, when they come into the Field House, they should fear the Field House and how hard they're going to have to work for kills, for points," said Gray-Walton." It gives me chills just thinking about it because people can rally behind that and crowds can rally behind that, our team can, our program can, and that's something that we need to continue to build on."
Arizona State won a tight first set 22-25, but the Sooners fired back in the second frame to win it 25-17, thanks in part to a four-point service run by Johnson that gave OU separation late in the game. OU dominated the third set 25-16, but Sun Devils answered in the fourth to force a fifth. The final set saw ties at every point up to 11-all, but OU used kills from Sanders and
Sarah Maras to pull away. The Sooners ended the night in thrilling fashion, with Kadiku and Dunbar putting up a wall on the outside to block out an ASU attack.Ā
