Sooners Advance in 3x3 Qualifying Tournament

NORMAN – A group of Sooners is moving on in the USA Basketball 3x3 qualifying tournament after winning the San Antonio Regional Qualifier on Saturday. The team of Mandy Simpson, Gabby Gregory, Madi Williams and Taylor Robertson advanced to the USA Basketball 3X3 South Regional in Atlanta, Ga.
The OU quartet won one of 22 national qualifying tournaments that is designed to help identify the eight athletes who could potentially represent USA Basketball in 3x3 at the 2020 Olympics. The group of OU players moved on to compete in Atlanta on Saturday, Sept. 21, with an opportunity to advance to the 3X3 Nationals in March 2020.
The 3x3 Nationals will be used to select the USA men's and women's 3x3 national teams for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The OU team went 4-0 in Saturday's event, winning two games in pool play followed by victories in the semifinals and finals.
Tied at 19 in the championship game, the OU athletes got a crucial stop to setup a Williams layup. With one more point needed to clinch the victory, the Sooners forced another stop to regain possession. Simpson picked up a clutch offensive rebound and was fouled on her putback attempt. She won the game at the foul line to send the group of Sooners to Atlanta.
The sport of 3x3 basketball will be making its Olympic debut next summer. The game is played with a roster of four players (three in play and one substitute) on a half court with one basket using a 12-second shot clock. Made shots inside of the arc count as one point while shots outside the arc are worth two. The game is decided when one team reaches 21 or after eight game minutes.
