TULSA, Okla. – Kaylee Dao is still golden.
With the Sooners in their third straight overtime game, Dao came through once again with a late-game equalizer and game winning goal as OU defeated Tulsa, 3-2, Sunday night.
"Kaylee was again instrumental in leading the team," head coach Matt Potter said. "While she scores two more, it is the manner with which she drives her team to be better and inspires others to follow her that catches the attention of the staff. Watching how others are starting to showcase their skills, we now look forward to an incredibly challenging road trip to Arizona."
Dao's game-winner in overtime was her second game-winning goal of the year and her fifth goal of the season. Of OU's 17 shots on the night, Dao was responsible for eight of them, her second straight game with at least eight shots.
OU improved to 3-0-1 on the season, including a 2-0-1 record in overtime games. The Sooners are undefeated through their first four games for the first time since 2009 when they won four straight to open the year.
"In my time here, we have always had incredibly tough games against Tulsa," Potter said. "The staff and the way they play has always impressed me and challenges us to rise to the occasion. We come away having earned a win the hard way. As a team, the character and competitive desire we showed is awesome. The quality of decision making is improving both as individuals and as our relationships grow, our style is evolving."
In the 98th minute, sophomore Jazzy Richards drove down the field, finding a wide-open Dao near the top of the 18-yard box. Dao sent a powerful shot over the leaping Tulsa keeper to end the game and give OU the win.
OU took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes in as junior Yuuka Kurosaki found the back of the net off an assist from senior Ivanna Rivas. Rivas sent in a cross from 18-yards out and on a close-range shot, Kurosaki notched her second goal of the season.
Tulsa found the equalizer in the 26th minute on a shot from Averee Dubach. Dubach collected the rebound off a free-kick attempt and launched her shot into the upper left corner to make it a 1-1 game.
After Tulsa scored for a 2-1 lead just two minutes into the second half, Dao would score her first goal of the night in the 74th minute. Kurosaki took a corner kick for the Sooners, sending a curving shot to the far post. Dao found the ball in the air, heading it past the Tulsa defense to tie the game at 2-all.
OU will continue its five-game road swing with a pair of matches in Arizona next weekend. The Sooners will face Arizona on Friday, Sept. 6, and Arizona State on Sunday, Sept. 8.
