Sooners Handed First Loss at Arizona
September 06, 2019 | Soccer
For the first time in five games, the Sooners were held off the scoreboard as the Arizona defense held them to just three shots on the night.
"While disappointed with our own performance the credit goes to Arizona for the way they imprinted themselves on us," head coach Matt Potter said. "They had the quality when needed and punished us for aspects of the game we have done well in up to this point. Losing is something we haven't experienced and the lessons we can learn from today will carry us forward to Sunday with reason to be optimistic. I'm confident we will see a reaction in the players."
Arizona took the lead in the ninth minute on a goal by Hannah Clifford. Off a rebound, Clifford took possession and needed just one touch to slot the ball inside the far post to give the Wildcats the lead.In the 70th minute, Arizona's Leah Carillo found the back of the net off another rebound shot. OU keeper McKinley Crone blocked the first shot attempt, but Carillo was in perfect position to collect the rebound and put Arizona up 2-0.
Sophomore Jazzy Richards had the best opportunity of the first half as she went one-on-one with the Arizona defense. Her shot was deflected to set up an OU corner kick, but the Sooners couldn't convert to find the equalizer.
In the second half, senior Kaylee Dao tried a shot from close range but had her attempt blocked.
In her first start of the season, McKinley Crone recorded three saves. Arizona outshot the Sooners, 15-3, and finished with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Up next for the Sooners is a Sunday night battle at Arizona State at 7 p.m. CT. The match will air on the Pac-12 Network. OU will stay on the road the following weekend with matches at Nebraska (Sept. 13) and Creighton (Sept. 15).
