Sooners XC Wraps Up First Meet

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams began their 2019 seasons Saturday morning at the Hurricane Preview in Tulsa, Okla., at the Mohawk Sports Complex.

Paced by two top-10 individual finishes, the Sooners' women's squad took third in the 3,600-meter race, topping Oklahoma State and coming in behind first-place Arkansas and second-place Tulsa. The women's team finished in a team-average time of 13:34 and total time of 1:07:47.

The men's team placed fourth, paced by freshman Luke Reid's sixth-place finish in 20:28. The OU men finished in an average time of 20:45, and total time of 1:43:45 in the 6,400-meter race.

"I'm very satisfied with the way our teams performed today," OU interim head cross country coach Tim Langford said. "The races gave us an honest snapshot of where we are in our training plan.

"The team ran as a unit today and it showed. Led by Luke Reid on the men's side and Elise Welch on the women's side, the deviation from our first finisher to our fifth-place finisher was the best amongst every team on both sides. As we continue to gain fitness over the next four weeks, the entire program will move up in the standings."

Freshman Elise Welch led the women's team with a ninth-place finish in 13:11, fellow freshman Madeline Medina crossed the line in 13:21 to place 10th.

On the men's side, freshman Luke Reid paced the team with a sixth-place finish, clocking in at 20:28. Redshirt senior Zach Gentry finished in 20:35 to take 11th.

The Sooners' cross country teams return to the course Oct. 5 at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
