NORMAN — A program-record six members of the No. 1/1 Oklahoma softball team have been named NFCA All-Americans, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
Senior infielders Caleigh Clifton and Sydney Romero and junior pitcher Giselle Juarez are all First Team honorees. Senior outfielder Falepolima Aviu and sophomore outfielder Jocelyn Alo each earned Second Team recognition, and freshman utility player Grace Green was named to the Third Team.
In addition to setting a program record, six selections are the most in Division I softball this season. This marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons that Oklahoma has had at least three representatives on the NFCA's All-America teams and the second consecutive year with three First Team selections.
It is the second career accolade for Clifton, Romero, Juarez and Alo and the first for Aviu and Green.
Clifton is one of seven unanimous First Team honorees. The Wayne, Okla., product is creating the best offensive production of her career, on-pace to set single-season career highs with a .435 batting average, .457 on-base percentage and .853 slugging percentage.
The Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Clifton ranks third nationally in slugging percentage, fourth in runs per game (1.2), sixth in on-base percentage, 11th in triples (six), 20th in total bases (136), 22nd in walks per game (.77), 27th in batting average and 28th in home runs (17). Additionally, she has reached base in Oklahoma's last 37 games.
Romero joins Clifton as some of the top offensive producers in the country this season. One of three finalists for USA Softball Player of the Year, Romero currently ranks third nationally in total bases (163), fourth in sacrifice flies (six), sixth in hits (83), 11th in runs per game (1.11), 13th in slugging percentage (.853), 15th in batting average (.435), 16th in home runs (19) and 30th in toughest to strike out (23.9 at-bats per strikeout).
In her senior campaign, Romero is on pace to register the best single-season batting average (.435), on-base percentage (.457) and slugging percentage (.853) of her accomplished career. The 2019 Big 12 Player of the Year, Romero leads all active Division I players with 313 career hits, 833 career at-bats and 545 career total bases. She also ranks third with 212 career RBIs and fourth with 224 runs scored and 57 doubles.
Juarez is 26-1 in her first season in the Crimson and Cream with a 1.10 ERA that ranks sixth nationally. She has registered two perfect games in 2019, joining Paige Parker as the only Sooners to tally multiple perfect games in a season. Additionally, Juarez threw a no-hitter on May 18 in an NCAA Regional game against Wisconsin to become just the second OU pitcher to toss a no-hitter during the NCAA Tournament, joining Keilani Ricketts (vs. Michigan on May 30, 2013).
A native of Glendale, Ariz., Juarez was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and earned six Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors this season, including the last four. Juarez has recorded 12 games this season with double-digit strikeouts, and she ranks second in the country in hits allowed per seven innings pitched (3.15), fourth in strikeouts per seven innings (10.5) and fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.39).
Like Clifton and Romero, Aviu is on track to register the best single-season batting average (.362), on-base percentage (.472) and slugging percentage (.583) in her senior campaign. Aviu has proven to be one of the toughest batters to strikeout in 2019, ranking 17th nationally with 27.2 at-bats per strikeout.
A native of Oceanside, Calif., Aviu has been error-free over 56 starts this year. Primarily spending time at left field, Aviu leads all Oklahoma outfielders with 66 putouts on the year and ranks fourth among all Sooners.
Earning All-America accolades for the second consecutive season is Alo. The Hauula, Hawaii, native ranks in the top 50 nationally in home runs (15), slugging percentage (.753) and home runs per game (.28).
Alo reached base for 30 consecutive games from March 9 to May 17. She has recorded 17 games this season with multiple hits and 11 games with multiple RBIs.
Green was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after leading the Big 12 in home runs (9), RBIs (27), total bases (53) and slugging percentage (1.000) during conference games this year. She also paced Big 12 freshmen in batting average (.415), hits (22), runs scored (17), on-base percentage (.476) and slugging (1.000) in league contests.
One of 10 finalists for NFCA Freshman of the Year, Green ranks 39th nationally in home runs (16) and slugging percentage (.763).
The Sooners are back in action this week as they open the 2019 Women's College World Series against No. 8 seed Alabama on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. CT.
