EAST LANSING, Mich. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team opened the 2019-20 season Saturday, collecting five top-five finishes at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich.
Three Sooners won their way through the championship brackets to earn spots in their respective title bouts: sophomore Anthony Madrigal, redshirt sophomore Dom Demas and redshirt sophomore Jake Woodley.
At 133 pounds, No. 24 Madrigal won his first match of the year with a 16-1 tech fall over Ohio State's Dylan Koontz in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. Madrigal then collected a pair of upsets to earn a spot in the first-place match, first over No. 11 Derek Spann (Buffalo), 6-4, and then over No. 17 Mario Guillen (Ohio), 3-1, with a sudden victory takedown. He was defeated by No. 4 Micky Phillippi (Pitt), 4-2, in the finals match.
Demas, the preseason's top-ranked wrestler at 141, defeated Kyran Hagan (Ohio) in tie-breaker one, 5-3, in the first round, then earned a quarterfinal spot with a 21-5 tech fall over Rochester's Anthony Gonzales at 2:59. Demas pinned Indiana's Paul Konrath in the quarterfinal bout before earning another tech fall victory (23-7) over Parker Filius (Purdue). In a close finals match, Demas was defeated by No. 3 Luke Pletcher (Ohio State) in tie-breaker one, 2-1, taking second place.
After a bye in the first round, No. 16 Woodley won back-to-back bouts by decision and major decision over Indiana's Jake Kleimola (9-3) and Penn's Cole Urbas (11-3), respectively. After winning the semifinal via medical forfeit, Woodley was defeated in sudden-victory overtime by No. 1 Kollin Moore (Ohio State), 6-4, to earn a runner-up finish.
At 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Anthony Mantanona went 4-1 on the day, including three wins via fall. Mantanona pinned Nathan Jimenez (Michigan State) in round 2, Layne Malczewski (Michigan State) in the consolation semifinals and Jacob Covaciu (Indiana) in the third-place match. Mantanona's lone loss was to DJ Shannon (Illinois) by decision, 7-2, in the 174 semifinals.
Redshirt junior Justin Thomas claimed fifth place at 157. He started the day 3-0, with victories over Cal Poly's Brawley Lamer (8-3), Purdue's Elijah Davis (14-0) and Michigan State's No. 24 Jake Tucker (6-2), before moving to consolation after a 3-2 defeat by No. 8 Anthony Artalona (Penn) in the semifinals.
Oklahoma entered a pair of Sooners in each of the 125, 149 and 184 classes.
Redshirt senior No. 18 Christian Moody and redshirt freshman Tommy Hoskins both went 1-2 at 125. Hoskins' 12-3 major decision over Dane Durlacher (Illinois) was his first collegiate victory.
At 149, redshirt freshman Jacob Butler also picked up his first victory as a Sooner, winning in sudden-victory overtime over Dallas Bulsak (Pitt), 2-0. Butler finished the open tournament 1-2, while fellow redshirt freshman Zackery Zeamer went 0-2. Senior Ruston Duke (184), redshirt sophomore Jake Boyd (184) and redshirt freshman Jose Lao Cooper (165) also finished 0-2.
In the heavyweight division, redshirt freshman Josiah Jones won his first two matches of the season. His first came as a 3-2 decision over Buffalo's Nolan Terrance, and he followed it up with a pin of Tiffin's Austin Wingarner. Jones finished the day 2-2, while redshirt sophomore Connor Webb also went 2-2 with decisions over Michigan State's Jackson Ross (3-2) and Matt Lloyd (Maj 8-0). Redshirt sophomore Collin McCoy went 0-2.
