Dao's Golden Hat Trick Leads OU to Victory

NORMAN – Kaylee Dao is golden once again.
With the Sooners (6-4-3, 1-1-1 Big 12) in their seventh overtime game of the season, it was Dao who would come through with her third golden-goal of the year as the Sooners defeated Kansas State (2-8-2, 0-3-0), 3-2, Thursday night.
Dao notched her first career hat trick in the victory, netting all three Sooner goals to bring her season total to 11. Her 11 goals this season rank fourth all-time in OU history and she tallied the fourth hat trick in program history and first since Caren Nelson in 2015.
"It was pure elation, really," Dao said. "For me it was just about winning the game. Getting the third goal, I was just glad to get the win. It just helps to know that I am contributing as much as I can this year. Your redshirt senior year, you want to give all you can to your team. For me, that's a tangible thing that I can say that I've given this year. So, that's just something very exciting."
The Sooners improved to 3-1-3 in overtime games this season with Dao notching the game winner in all three victories. Of OU's season-high 25 shots on the night, Dao was responsible for seven of them, including four on goal.
"The incredible thing about Kaylee is that everybody knows who she is, yet she still finds way to put herself in a position to score a goal," head coach Matt Potter said. "Tonight is another example of that. She's an inspirational player, she obviously leads the charge of our group, and we are very fortunate to have her on our team."
OU had to play from behind as the Wildcats took an early lead in the 20th minute. Brookelynn Entz dropped off a pass inside the 18-yard box and Laramie Hall punched her shot into the lower right corner.
The Sooners would respond in the 31st minute off Dao's first goal of the night. Sophomore Megan Reilly sent a beautiful corner right to a waiting Dao, who headed the ball just inside the near post to tie the game at 1-all.
The Wildcats converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute to take a 2-1 lead that wouldn't last long. In the 62nd minute, Dao notched her second goal of the game off a free kick attempt from junior Yuuka Kurosaki.
"Something that we talked about at halftime was about how can we dictate the tempo of the game," Potter said. "We've got quality throughout our team. We wanted to keep that tempo high. Kudos to the players."
OU outshot Kansas State 25-13 on the night with a 10-7 shot on goal advantage. Junior Nikki Panas recorded five saves in goal to improve to 2-1-1 on the year.
The Sooners will host Kansas at John Crain Field on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. CT, before welcoming Baylor to Norman on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. CT.
