Dao Nets Golden Goal in Overtime Victory
October 13, 2019 | Soccer
NORMAN – Stay golden, Kaylee Dao.
Once again, it was Dao who would lead the Sooners (7-5-3, 2-2-1) to an overtime victory as she netted her fourth golden goal of the year. Behind Dao, Oklahoma took down the defending Big 12 Champion Baylor Bears (6-4-3, 2-2-0), 2-1, Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.
"First and foremost, it was a tough, competitive game and we knew that coming in," head coach Matt Potter said. "Coming off an overtime on Thursday and Baylor not being able to complete their game, we knew it was going to be a fight. Baylor is so good at what they do, and they bring out the best in you as a competitor. We tried to take the game to them. We pride ourselves on our discipline on set pieces. We figured something out and it got executed today."
With the score tied at 1-1, the Sooners headed to their fourth-straight overtime game and ninth of the season. Four minutes into the first overtime, Dao recorded her fourth game-winning goal and 12th of the year.
Freshman Caroline Berutti sent the ball from midfield to Dao who dribbled around a Baylor defender, slotting the ball into the near post to secure the win for OU.
"I think we're running out of things to say about Kaylee," Potter said. "She's just having that senior year that you hope every senior gets to have and our seniors are having. When you talk about Kaylee, she's such a competitor and she wants to drive the team forward. I couldn't be happier for her. We're very proud of her."
The Sooners are now 4-2-3 in overtime games this season. The nine overtime games in a season ties the program record set in both 2003 and 2014.
"I'm not sure we could play a game without overtime, but we're prepared and working hard," Potter said. "We know how to play our way through those moments."
OU had to play from behind after Baylor took the early lead in the 13th minute. Freshman Elizabeth Kooiman fired a shot from the top of the six-yard box on a cross from Raegan Padgett to give Baylor the 1-0 lead.
The Sooners entered the second-half scoreless, but tied the game following a goal from freshman Maya McCutcheon. Sophomore Megan Reilly sent a corner right to McCutcheon who headed the ball in, putting OU on the board in the 77th minute.
The Bears narrowly outshot the Sooners, 16-15, on the day. Dao led all players with her third game of at least eight shots on the year.
Junior goalkeeper Nikki Panas improved to 3-2-1 on the season, after recording seven saves against the Bears.
The Sooners will hit the road for a trio of conference games, kicking off at Iowa State on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. CT.
