Sooners Start Fall Strong at Head of the Oklahoma

NORMAN – In the first regatta of the 2018-19 season, the University of Oklahoma rowing team got off to a strong start at the Head of
“I think the team is in a really good place," said Oklahoma rowing head coach Leeanne Crain. "We are making significant gains in practice every day and it's great to get out to do some time trials early in the fall because it breaks up the training and keeps things interesting. I think we're heading in a really positive direction and I'm excited to see the training pay off this spring.”
In Saturday afternoon's collegiate 8+ competition, two Sooners' boats secured top-10 finishes. Oklahoma A led the way for OU with a fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 14:38.66. The OU B boat posted an eighth-place finish with a time of 14:57.90. The Oklahoma C boat took 18th, finishing in 16:18.87.
In the annual night sprints' collegiate 8+ 500-meter grand final, both Sooners' boats that competed took home medal finishes. The Oklahoma A boat claimed gold, winning the competition in a time of 1:30.35. Oklahoma B took bronze, finishing in 1:32.83.
The Sooners' weekend concluded on Sunday with the open pairs competition. Three OU boats took home top-10 finishes. Maria Pergouli and Breah McKay paced the Sooners with a silver-medal finish, crossing the line in 17:08.19. Madeleine Lange and Andreja Kekic took fourth with a time of 17:20.43. Taking seventh place was Kalie Heffernan and Jessica Robinson, finishing in 17:40.09. Rounding out the top ten was Annika Smith and Frauke Berger, placing tenth with a time of 17:49.55. Out of the other eight Sooners' boats that raced in the 40-boat competition, seven took home top-30 finishes.
The Sooners 1V8 brought home gold in Saturday night's 500m night sprints' final.
Oklahoma rowing returns to the water Oct. 21 for their final fall regatta at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.
