Sooners Roll to Open Fall Festival

NORMAN -- Oklahoma softball opened its fall slate with a pair of wins at its annual Fall Festival on Friday inside Marita Hynes Field.

The Sooners defeated Butler Community College, 13-1, in five innings in the opening game of the night. In the nightcap, OU picked up an 11-1 victory over Trinity Valley Community College.

The Sooners wrap up their Fall Festival on Saturday against Seminole State at 4:45 p.m. and Northern Oklahoma College at 7 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma 13, Butler CC 1 (5 innings)

Juniors Mariah Lopez and Shannon Saile combined to strike out 10, giving up just one run on five hits against Butler CC. Lopez earned the win in the circle by tossing 3.0 innings of work. The junior gave up one run on five hits, while striking out six.

Saile faced one over the minimun in 2.0 innings of relief work, striking out four without surrendering a hit.

OU opened the scoring with a five-run second inning before plating six in the third to jump out to an 11-1 lead.

Fale Aviu, Caleigh Clifton, Raegan Rogers and Sydney Romero each finished with two hits apiece. Romero opened the second inning with a solo home run and scored twice, while Rogers tripled and finished with two RBI. Clifton was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and stole two bases.

Nicole Mendes finished with three RBI and was 1-for-2 at the plate. Lynnsie Elam drove in two runs and finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Oklahoma 11, Trinity Valley CC (5 inninigs)

Mendes started in the circle and picked up the victory, throwing 3.0 innings and giving up one run on three hits. The junior recorded five strikeouts and did not issue a walk during her outing.

Brooke Vestal struck out four in relief, tossing 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. The freshman did not surrender a run or hit during her first game action at Marita Hynes Field.

After falling behind 1-0 after the top of the first, OU quickly responded with seven runs in the bottom of the frame. After OU plated two runs on a wild pitch and throwing error by Trinity Valley CC, Aviu belted a deep shot over the wall in right field to push the Sooners in front 4-1. After a RBI single by Elam extended OU's lead to 5-1, Grace Lyons roped a two-out RBI single to score two more runs to close out the bottom of the first.

After adding a pair of runs in the fourth, Grace Green's sharp single to right field with the bases loaded brough two runs in to seal the win for the Sooners in the fifth inning.

Aviu was 2-for-3 in the nightcap with two RBI and run scored. Elam drove in three runs and finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored. Lyons also had two hits and added two RBI.
