Reband, Sooners Lead after Day One at Carmel Cup

August 31, 2018 | Men's Golf

NORMAN — The No. 3 Oklahoma men's golf team started the new season on a strong note Friday, grabbing a 10-shot lead after the first round of the Carmel Cup. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the iconic par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.

The Sooners carded a 340 (-20) during Friday's opening round as three OU players finished the day in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. As a team, the Sooners carded 29 birdies during their round.

Each team competes with six golfers at the Carmel Cup, and the low five scores count toward the team total each round.

On the team leaderboard, OU leads second-place Oklahoma State by 10 strokes after the Cowboys posted a first-round 350 (-10) Friday. Georgia is in third place at 352 (-8), followed by TCU in fourth at 354 (-6). Arkansas rounds out the top five after carding a 356 (-4) during the first round.

Reband turned in the best round of his collegiate career to earn the individual lead after the first round. The junior's 64 (-8) bested his previous low score of 67, which came last season at the 2017 Carmel Cup. Reband's 64 is tied for the seventh-lowest individual round in OU's record books, which date back to the 1993-94 season. The Fort Worth, Texas, native picked up a team-best nine birdies in the first round.

Hale shares second place after carding an opening-round 65 (-7) on Friday, just one stroke away from matching his career-low round. The senior picked up an eagle on hole No. 2 and did not look back, making the turn at six-under. Hale, who played bogey-free during the opening 18 holes, totaled five birdies on Friday.

Hale and Reband are the first pair of Sooners to shoot 65 or lower in one round since 2011.

Junior Riley Casey is tied for 10th place after recording a 69 (-3) in the first round. Casey started the day with five birdies on the front nine and made the turn at 4-under.

Senior Brad Dalke shares 16th place after logging a 70 (-2) during the first day of action. Dalke tallied four birdies on his scorecard.

Redshirt junior Quade Cummins and freshman Logan McAllister are tied for 23rd place an even-par 72. Cummins overcame a slow start to finish at even-par. In his first collegiate round, McAllister logged three birdies.

The second round of the Carmel Cup is scheduled for Saturday morning and the Sooners will tee off at 10 a.m. CT on hole No. 1. OU is paired with Oklahoma State, Georgia and TCU for the second round.
