Sooners Take Second at Big 12 Championship

NORMAN — The Oklahoma rowing team clinched second place at the 2018 Big 12 Championship, held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Sooners totaled 38 points, 10 points behind third-ranked Texas. The Longhorns and Sooners were followed by Tennessee (37 points), Kansas State (31), Alabama (23), Kansas (21), Old Dominion (10) and West Virginia (8).
In addition, five Sooners were named to the All-Big 12 Team: rowers Abby Lange, Maria Pergouli, Katja Ruebling and Sophie Salt and coxswain Ruby Hays.
Overall, the Sooners claimed four silver-medal placings and a fourth-place finish.
In the first race of the day, the Sooners' 3V8 boat crossed the finish line in 7:07.564. It edged Alabama, Tennessee, Kansas State, Kansas and Old Dominion while finishing second to Texas.
The Oklahoma 2V4 clocked in at 7:42.595 to place second, finishing almost five seconds faster than third-place Alabama. The Sooners also took second in their next race, finishing in 7:30.862 in the 1V4 contest.
Oklahoma's 2V8 placed fourth with a time of 6:59.310, finishing behind Texas, Tennessee and Kansas State, respectively.
The 1V8 boat closed out the Sooners' day with another second-place finish (6:41.714), crossing ahead of Tennessee, Kansas State, Kansas and Alabama.
With Texas earning the automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA Championships, the Sooners would need to be selected as an at-large team, which is announced Tuesday at 5 p.m.
