NORMAN – No. 2/2 Oklahoma softball swept its third straight conference series with a 9-1 run-rule win against Iowa State in five innings on Monday afternoon at Marita Hynes Field.
The Sooners improved to 34-2 on the season (9-0 Big 12) while the Cyclones fell to 18-24 (1-8 Big 12). OU has now won 33 straight games against the Cyclones.
With the series sweep, the Sooners extended their win streak to 25, good for the longest active streak in the nation and third-longest in program history. Additionally, OU has won 20 straight home games, dating back to the 2017 season, a run that ranks fifth in school records.
The run-rule win was OU's 14th of the season and fifth in conference play.
Paige Parker and Paige Lowary combined in the circle on Monday. Parker moved to 19-1 with her second win of the series, allowing one run on two hits over 3.0 innings while striking out three. Lowary closed the last 2.0 frames, allowing no runs or hits and striking out the final batter.
At the plate, OU was led by Shay Knighten, who went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk and a home run. Fale Aviu also went yard in the contest, tallying three RBIs and scoring once on a 1-for-1 performance. Lea Wodach also had a mutli-RBI day, driving in two runs, and Jocelyn Alo finished the day with two hits and two runs scored.
Iowa State struck first when Sami Williams led off with a double and was driven in by a base hit by Sydney Stites in the first inning. However, the Sooner defense quickly settled in as Parker and Lowary retired the next 15 batters in order.
The Sooners offense also responded and took a commanding lead with seven runs in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Nicole Mendes and Caleigh Clifton drew a pair of walks to bring Alo and Knighten home.
The next batter, Wodach, singled through the left side to drive in Nicole Pendley and Mendes. Aviu then drilled her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left center that extended the lead to 7-1.
Shay Knighten hit a blast of her own in the second inning, a two-run shot to left center that put OU up 9-1 and sealed the run-rule win. It was Knighten's third homer of the season.
“When you look at the scoreboard and you see nine runs on seven hits, the runs are coming through bases on balls and timely hitting, and you can see that happening,” OU head coach Patty Gasso said. “These guys understand that. We've been working on that. I think we got out of our rhythm a little bit yesterday, but today they were right back in it. (There were) hard-fought battles at the plate where they're running pitchers into a lot of pitches by fouling things off and working the count… I'm really, really happy with what I saw today.”
The Sooners are back in action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT as they host Wichita State in a midweek contest.
