OU Starts Strong at San Diego Crew Classic

March 24, 2018 | Rowing

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oklahoma rowing team hit the water for the first time this spring, finishing up day one at the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday in Mission Bay, Calif., with two second-place finishes.

OU raced its 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 on the first day of the two-day regatta, competing against top-level competition including 2017 national runner-up California and Big 12 rival Tennessee.

"The 2V8 and 1V4 did what they needed to get into their respective grand finals," head coach Leeanne Crain said. "We have a young team and I expect them to learn from every race and continue to improve."

The 1V8 kicked off the day for the Sooners, placing fifth in their heat with a time of 7:01.790. They finished behind California, the University of Victoria, Washington State and Gonzaga, and defeated UCSB. With their fifth-place finish, they will compete in the petite final tomorrow at 12:24 p.m. CT, where they will face Gonzaga, UCSB, Stanford, Tennessee and San Diego.

"The 1V8 struggled with the conditions and never found their rhythm," Crain said. "We'll have to put together a better race in the petite final tomorrow."

In OU's second race of the day, the 2V8 took second in their heat, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:57.628. They finished ahead of Gonzaga, SDSU, San Diego and Portland, and behind Cal. As a top-two finisher in their heat, they qualify for tomorrow's grand final at 11:44 a.m. CT and will go up against California, Texas, USC, Washington State and UCLA.

The 1V4 picked up another second-place finish for the Sooners, finishing with a time of 7:34.319 and qualifying for tomorrow's grand final. Tennessee, SMU and San Diego finished behind OU and California placed first. They will take on California, Texas, UCLA, Washington State and USC tomorrow at 10:24 a.m CT.

Though they did not compete today, the 2V4 will compete tomorrow at 1:40 p.m. CT.
