Sooners Open Carmel Cup in Second Place

NORMAN ā The No. 3 Oklahoma men's golf team is in second place after the opening round of the Carmel Cup on Friday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the iconic par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
In a field that is loaded with five top-25 teams, the Sooners shot a 338 (-10) in Friday's first round as three OU players finished the day in the top 10 on the leaderboard.
"For our first round of the year, I felt like the guys did a really nice job today," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Brad Dalke, Garrett Reband and Grant Hirschman all played very solid golf.
"It was great to see (Garrett) play the way he did in his first competitive team round and I'm very proud of him. We have a lot of golf left and we need to get after it on Saturday."
Dalke led the Sooners and is in sole possession of fourth place after firing a first-round 67 (-5). The junior was consistent throughout the day, recording six birdies. The Norman, Okla., native's 67 is tied for his second-lowest score in an opening round during his OU career.
Reband nearly matched his career-best round at OU, posting a 68 (-4) and is in sole possession of fifth heading into Saturday's second round. Reband started the round strong, picking up three birdies and an eagle through nine holes to finish with his second-lowest score as a Sooner.
Hirschman is tied for eighth place with a 69 (-3) in the first round. The senior was consistent throughout the day and closed his round with a trio of birdies on the back nine.Ā
Sophomore Riley Casey is tied for 26th after recording an even-par 72, while junior Blaine Hale is tied for 33rd after shooting a two-over 74. Senior Rylee Reinertson rounded OU's lineup, posting a 9-over 81 during Friday's first round.
Oklahoma State paces the eight-team field after posting a 338 (-22) in the opening round. TCU is in third at 351 (-9), followed by Arkansas in fourth at 354 (-6). Texas Tech rounds at the top five at 356 (-4).
The second round of the Carmel Cup is scheduled for Saturday morning and the Sooners will tee off at 10 a.m. CT.
