OU in Second Through 36 Holes of NCAA Play
May 27, 2017 | Men's Golf
NORMAN — Fueled by the third-lowest round of the tournament among all teams, the Oklahoma men's golf team sits in second place after two rounds of the 2017 NCAA Championships, held in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Friday's first round experienced delays and was eventually suspended due to darkness, so the No. 13-seeded Sooners began Saturday by playing the second half of the first round. The team went 4 under in the morning to post a 284 (-4) for the round at the par-72, 7,300-yard Rich Harvest Farms.
OU then immediately began the second round, and the Sooners came out in dominating fashion. On the front nine, the squad fired 13 birdies, an eagle and just two bogeys among all five golfers. Oklahoma went on to finish the round with a 279 (-9).
“We had a great day, and I am not going to take anything away from that,” eighth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We had a great day. We put ourselves in a nice position and we have a lot of work in front of us.”
With a two-round 563 (-13), the Sooners are just one stroke behind No. 12 seed and tournament-leader UNLV. No. 7 Illinois is in third, two strokes behind OU, and No. 3 Vanderbilt and No. 17 Auburn are tied for fourth at 566 (-10).
After Sunday's third round of stroke play, the 30-team field will be cut to 15. One more round of stroke play will be held Monday before the field is reduced to the final eight teams that will advance to match play competition, held Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sophomore Brad Dalke currently paces the Sooners, holding a share of 17th place with a 36-hole 140 (-4). After sinking three birdies in the morning to finish his first round with a 70 (-2), Dalke produced six more birdies in the second round. Aside from a stumble on hole No. 17, the Norman, Okla., native played bogey free in the second round to card another 70 (-2).
Also in the top 20 for OU are senior Max McGreevy and sophomore Blaine Hale, who are in a tie for 19th place, one stroke behind Dalke. McGreevy played every hole at or below par in the second half of his first round to record a bogey-free 69 (-3) for the round. He then tallied a 72 (E) in the second round.
Hale, who began the day on hole No. 2, opened Saturday with an eagle en route to a first-round 72 (E). He then eagled hole No. 2 again in the second round before producing six birdies, including four consecutive on holes Nos. 9-12. Despite struggling on holes Nos. 13 and 17, the sophomore logged a 69 (-3) for the second round.
Junior Rylee Reinertson currently has a piece of 28th place with an overall 142 (-2). After posting a 74 (+2) in the first round, Reinertson bounced back to fire a 68 (-4), the Sooners' best round of the tournament so far. He totaled seven birdies in the second round.
Classmate Grant Hirschman rounds out the OU lineup, sitting in a tie for 62nd place at 145 (+1). Hirschman carded a 73 (+1) in the first round. He then opened the second round with a bogey-free, 4-under-par front nine, but a difficult back nine resulted in a 72 (E) for the round.
Additionally, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Saturday that Dalke, Hirschman and McGreevy had been named to the Division I PING All-Central Region team.
The Sooners are scheduled to begin Sunday's third round of stroke play at 8:13 a.m. CT from hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
