April 27, 2017 | Rowing
NORMAN – After a big performance this weekend at the Clemson Invitational, the Oklahoma rowing team enters the CRCA/US Coaches Rankings for the first time this season at No. 20.
“It's great to make it in the top 20. We've had some very good results this year, but I think we opened some eyes this past weekend with our performance at the Clemson Invitational,” OU Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. “We just need to keep building on the momentum as we approach our conference championship. We need to finish the season strong to qualify to NCAA's, but this is a great step forward.”
The Oklahoma 1V8 beat No. 18 Louisville by 5.3 seconds in the B final of the Clemson Invite. The Sooners fell to then-No. 19 Duke by just .057 seconds in the same race and was within five seconds of the Blue Devils and then-No. 14 Washington State in Saturday's opening session of the invitational. The squad also contended with then-No. 10 Virginia in Saturday evening's session, falling to the Cavaliers by less than two seconds.
OU's second varsity eight downed Washington State by .6 seconds in Friday evening's session before falling to the Cougars by .463 seconds in the B final. The Sooners also topped Louisville by 10.6 seconds in teh same race. The crew was also within four seconds of both Virginia and No. 20 Indiana in the second racing session on Saturday.
The Oklahoma first varsity four fell to Duke by less than three seconds in the A final but downed Washington State in both of Saturday's sessions as well Indiana in the afternoon session.
The Sooners, who received 35 votes, are only one of two Big 12 teams in the CRCA rankings as Texas currently sits in the No. 3 spot in the poll.
