Sooners Complete Day One at Clemson Invitational

NORMAN – The Oklahoma rowing team had a solid performance in the first two sessions of the annual Clemson Invitational Saturday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.

In the morning session, the Sooners opened with a fourth place finish in the 1V8 Heat 1, finishing with a time of 6:31.67. The Oklahoma 2V8 also took fourth in its heat, crossing the line in 6:32.3. The Sooners' first varsity four tallied a big third place finish in heat 1, finishing in 7:19.8. The Sooners' second varsity four crossed the line in second place with a time of 7:28.6 in the third heat. In the final morning race, the Oklahoma 3V8 came in fourth, finishing in 7:00.3 in heat No. 2.

The Saturday evening session was delayed 30 minutes due to windy conditions but teams were able get back on the water to finish the second of three sessions and the final session of Saturday's racing.

The Sooners' 3V8 opened the evening racing session with a fourth place finish in heat 1, crossing the line with a time of 6:48.163. In the 2V4 heat 3, the Oklahoma 2V4 crossed the line in 7:32.803 for third place. The Sooners' 1V4 competed in heat 3 finishing strong in 7:23.927 to take second place. Oklahoma's 2V8 boat took third in heat 3 with a time of 6:36.635. In the final race of the day, the OU first varsity eight finished in fourth place, crossing the line in 6:29.803.

"The team showed up ready to race, and I think we proved we can compete with some of the best in the country," OU Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. "We all know we have a lot more work to do between now and Big 12s, but at least we can feel good about moving in the right direction."

The 21-team regatta, which features nine teams in the latest CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Rankings, will include a final session on Sunday beginning at 6:30 a.m. CT.
