NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's golf team ended their season opener, the Carmel Cup, in fifth place. The three-day, 54-hole tournament took place at the iconic par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.

The Sooners, who are ranked No. 10 in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Poll, shot a 356 (-4) in Sunday's final round, making their three-round total 1063 (-17). Each team competed with six golfers, and the low five scores counted toward the team total each round.

“A great week to start the year, and overall, our guys played pretty solid,” eighth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We made a few big numbers this week, which cost us as a team, and we need to get better at that.”

No. 4 Oklahoma State claimed the team title with an overall 1042 (-38). No. 9 Georgia finished second at 1050 (-30), and Texas Tech took third at 1051 (-29). Host team No. 5 Vanderbilt ended in fourth with a 1056 (-24).

Senior Max McGreevy was the best finisher for the Sooners. With an overall 209 (-7), the returning All-American earned a share of eighth place, marking the 18th top-20 and 12th top-10 finish of his career. In the third round, McGreevy went bogey-free for the second consecutive day, posting a 68 (-4), his 24th career round in the 60s.

“Max had a good week, which was nice to see him start well again this year,” Hybl said.

Brad Dalke finished in a tie for 20th place with a three-round 213 (-3). The sophomore carded a 72 (E) on Sunday, pocketing three birdies, to earn the sixth top-20 placing of his career.

Junior Grant Hirschman ended one stroke behind Dalke with a share of 22nd place. He shot three birdies en route to a 71 (-1) in the final round.

Sophomore Blaine Hale and freshman Riley Casey both posted an overall 215 (-1) for the tournament to tie for 25th place. In the third round, Hale recorded a 74 (+2) with three birdies. Casey, who was competing in his first collegiate tournament, collected an eagle and four birdies to total a 72 (E) for the second day in a row.

Rounding out the OU lineup was redshirt freshman Quade Cummins, who finished in 41st place with a 220 (+4) after shooting a 73 (+1) Sunday.

The Sooners return to action Sept. 10-11 (Saturday-Sunday) when they look to defend their title at the Gopher Invitational, played at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.

“I am already looking forward to Minnesota, and I know our guys are as well,” Hybl said.
