Sooners Begin Fall Slate in OKC

NORMAN – The Oklahoma rowing team begins its fall slate this Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Head of the Oklahoma regatta in the Oklahoma City Boathouse District. The Sooners will race in five separate races on Saturday.

The racing is part of the four-day Oklahoma Regatta Festival and includes day racing as well as OGE NightSprints and a family festival. The 2.5-mile head races will take place during the day against other collegiate teams and club squads. The night sprints are held after the sun goes down on the 500-meter OGE course.

“We're excited to race and get the fall season underway,” OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. “The team has been training hard and we're anxious to see what we can do in a competitive environment.”

The Sooners will start off with the women's collegiate eight at 12:30 p.m., followed by the varsity fours race at 4:20 p.m. The novice eights will compete in their first competition at 4:45 p.m. The nights sprints begin consist of the collegiate eight race at 7:55 p.m. and the collegiate fours at 9:50 p.m.

Oklahoma's fall season, a precursor to the championship spring season, is dominated by head races. Typically held in the fall for collegiate crews, head racing is a time-trial race where rowers race against the clock. The boat with the fastest time in its class is the winner.
