Sooners Move to Fifth in Carmel Cup

September 03, 2016 | Men's Golf

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's golf team advanced to fifth place after the second round of the Carmel Cup on Saturday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the iconic par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.

The Sooners, who are ranked No. 10 in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Poll, fired a 345 (-15) as a team to advance two spots in their season-opening tournament with an overall 707 (-13).

Each team in the event is competing with six golfers, and the low five scores count toward the team total each round. All six Sooners shot at or below par on Saturday.

“We had a great day, and I am proud of our guys,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Any time we can get all of our guys at par or better, then we have had a good day. We need another great one tomorrow to get back in contention.”

No. 9 Georgia leads the eight-team field at 694 (-26). No. 4 Oklahoma State holds second at 698 (-22), and fellow Big 12 competitor Texas Tech is in third two strokes behind the Cowboys. Host team No. 5 Vanderbilt sits in fourth with a two-round 703 (-17).

Pacing the Sooners are senior Max McGreevy and sophomores Blaine Hale and Brad Dalke, who share 14th place at 141 (-3) through 36 holes. McGreevy recorded a bogey-free 67 (-5) in the second round, marking his 23rd career round in the 60s, to move up 22 spots in the individual rankings.

Hale pocketed six birdies on Saturday en route to a 68 (-4), his third career round in the 60s. Dalke tallied a 70 (-2) in the second round and collected six birdies, including five during a bogey-free front nine.

“Max and Blaine played really solid, and Brad was close to having a great round,” Hybl said.

Sitting two strokes behind the trio are junior Grant Hirschman and freshman Riley Casey, who each hold a piece of 27th place. Hirschman shot an eagle and two birdies to total a 70 (-2) in the second round, and Casey fired a 72 (E) with four birdies.

Redshirt freshman Quade Cummins showed improvement on Saturday, posting a 70 (-2) with six birdies, to move into a tie for 40th place at 147 (+3).

The final round of the Carmel Cup is slated for Sunday morning, and the Sooners will begin teeing off at 9:10 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com
