Sooners Finish First Round of Fall Season

September 02, 2016 | Men's Golf

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's golf team is in seventh place in its season opening-tournament, the Carmel Cup, after the first round of play. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the iconic par-72, 6,828-yard Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.

The Sooners, who are ranked No. 10 in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll, shot a 362 (+2) in Friday's first round. Each team in the competition is playing with six golfers, and the low five scores count toward the team total each round.

“Not a great day for us, and we need to bounce back tomorrow,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “We did not make enough birdies today mainly because we didn't make many putts. Tomorrow will be a better day, and I know our guys will step up.”

No. 9 Georgia paces the eight-team field with a 352 (-8). TCU and Texas Tech share second place at 354 (-6), and fellow Big 12 opponent No. 4 Oklahoma State is in fourth at 355 (-5). Host school No. 5 Vanderbilt rounds out the top five at 356 (-4).

Sophomore Brad Dalke and freshman Riley Casey lead the Sooners through the first 18 holes, sharing 14th place individually at 71 (-1). Dalke put together a consistent round, pocketing three birdies on the day. Making his collegiate debut, Casey recorded an eagle and five birdies.

“It was nice to see first-timer Riley Casey shoot under par,” Hybl said.

Junior Grant Hirschman and sophomore Blaine Hale are tied for 29th place with a 73 (+1) in the first round. With the exception of a bogey on hole No. 5, Hirschman shot every hole at par on Friday. Hale played well all round, carding three birdies, before struggling on the final hole to go 1-over on the day.

“Blaine and Brad played well all day, but Blaine made a bad swing on 18 that cost him and us,” Hybl explained.

Max McGreevy totaled a 74 (+2) on Friday to end the day in a tie for 36th. The senior tallied two birdies in the first round.

Rounding out the Sooner lineup is redshirt freshman Quade Cummins. The Weatherford, Okla., native shot two birdies on the front nine but struggled on the back to finish the round with a 77 (+5) and a share of 45th place.

The second round of the Carmel Cup is scheduled for Saturday morning, and the Sooners will tee off starting at 9:10 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com
