September 10, 2016 | Men's Golf
NORMAN – After two rounds, the Oklahoma men's golf team is in a tie for second place in the Gopher Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event is taking place at the par-71, 7,152-yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
The Sooners, who are the defending team champions at the tournament, shot a 284 (E) during Saturday morning's first round before posting a 289 (+5) in the afternoon to finish with a 36-hole total of 573 (+5).
“Overall, today was a good day,” OU assistant coach Jim Garren said. “The guys executed the game plan for the most part. The morning round was really impressive—(the course) was playing long and the wind was really blowing hard.”
San Diego State holds a two-stroke lead ahead of OU, and No. 20 Arkansas is tied with the Sooners. Kent State and Michigan State are tied for fourth at 576 (+8).
Junior Grant Hirschman and sophomore Blaine Hale paced the Sooners on Saturday, sharing fifth place with a 36-hole 141 (-1). Hirschman fired a 68 (-3) Saturday morning, marking his ninth career round in the 60s, before carding a 73 (+2) in the afternoon session. Hale played consistently, recording a 70 (-1) and a 71 (E) with seven birdies in Saturday's two rounds.
Sophomore Brad Dalke is tied for 16th place with an overall 144 (+2). After shooting a 75 (+4) in the first round, Dalke bounced back with a 69 (-2) in the second, earning his sixth career round in the 60s.
“We had a couple big-time rounds for Hirschman and Dalke, while Hale was steady all day,” Garren said.
Max McGreevy, the tournament's defending individual champion, is tied for 43rd place at 148 (+6). In the first two rounds, the senior shot a 72 (+1) and a 76 (+5), respectively.
Rounding out the OU team lineup is redshirt freshman Quade Cummins, who is 50th with an overall 151 (+9). The Weatherford, Okla., native shot a 74 (+3) and a 77 (+6) on the day.
“I'm super proud of everyone today—it was a total team effort,” Garren said. “Everyone fought hard for 36 holes. We came here with a purpose against a great field on a championship course and we've put ourselves in position to compete for the title tomorrow.”
Freshmen Riley Casey and Garett Reband are competing in the separate Gopher Individual tournament, played at the nearby par-72, 6,953-yard Pioneer Creek Golf Course among 40 competitors. The pair is tied for ninth with an overall 145 (+1).
The final rounds of the Gopher Invitational and Individual are scheduled for Sunday morning, and the Sooners will begin teeing off at 8:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
