Competition in Rio Opens for Former Sooners

NORMAN - As the second week in Rio begins, track and field gets the spotlight and four former Sooners will be in that spotlight.
Ronnie Ash and Brittany Borman will represent the United States. Laverne Jones-Ferrett will compete for the Virgin Islands and Eric Cray will wear the uniform of the Phillipines as he could change competes.
Jones-Ferrett will open her competition in the women's 200 Monday at 9:35 am Rio time. The semifinal is set for Tuesday with the final set for Wednesday.
Cray will open in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 11:35 am Monday. The semi is set for Tuesday with the final scheduled for Thursday.
Ash will be the last to run on Monday. His first round race in the 110-meter hurdles is scheduled for 8:35 pm. The semifinal and final in the hurdles are scheduled for Tuesday.
Borman's journey continues in the javelin on Tuesday night. There are two qualifying sessions, one at 8:35 pm and the second at 9:50 pm. The javelin final is set for Thursday.
The 2016 games are the fourth consecutive for Jones-Ferrett, who competed in the 100 and 200 in 2004, 2008 and 2012. This is Borman's second time to qualify. It marks the first Olympic competition for Ash and Cray.
Cray was an All-American in the 400 hurdles for OU in 2012 and was part of an All-American relay that same year. Ash earned All-America honors in the indoor 60 and the outdoor 110 in 2011.
Borman earned All-America honors three times in the javelin in 2010-2012 as well as twice in the discus. Jones-Ferrett was a six-time All-American in the indoor 60, indoor 200, outdoor 100 and outdoor 200 in 2003-04 after transferring to OU.
Borman won five Big 12 titles in her Sooner career, including three in the javelin. Ash was a Big 12 champ in the 110 hurdles.

Will Claye, who opened his college career at OU, will compete in the triple jump qualifying Monday morning with the final set for Tuesday. A two-time bronze medalist in the IAAF World, Claye won the NCAA title in 2009 in the outdoor triple jump as a true freshman competing for OU. He owns the school record for OU in the indoor (55-1.50) and outdoor (56-4.75) triple jumps. He added the Big 12 title in the triple jump as a freshman and was a four-time All-American as a Sooner before transferring from OU.
