NORMAN – Oklahoma rising sophomore Aaron Terrazas won the 89th Mexican National Amateur Championship on Sunday at the Campeche Country Club in Campeche, Mexico.
The Veracruz, Mexico, native took the title in dramatic fashion. Entering the fourth and final round with the lead, Terrazas shot a 74 (+2) to bring his overall score to 288 (E) and finish in a tie with Chile's Claudio Correa, the tournament's defending champion. Terrazas then defeated Correa in the first playoff hole.
"This victory means a lot to me because I've been working really hard on my game," Terrazas said. "It also means a lot to me because I didn't have a very good freshman year, and this victory will really boost my confidence for my future tournaments. I'm just very proud to represent the University of Oklahoma at my national event."
Overall, Terrazas posted scores of 71 (-1), 72 (E), 71 (-1) and 74 (+2) en route to the title. He pocketed 12 birdies in total for the event.
"Anytime you can win your national championship, it is a really big accomplishment," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We are proud of Aaron for his win and representation of OU."
By winning the tournament, Terrazas also earned a spot in next year's U.S. Amateur.
