Oklahoma is now 12-15 all-time against Louisiana-Lafayette, including a 4-1 mark in postseason play and 4-0 record in Norman ... the victory was No. 26 in a row for OU; the second longest win streak in program history behind a 29-game run during the 2005 season ... the Sooners have also won 33 of their past 34 games ... all-time, OU is 12-11 in |
NORMAN – No. 3 Oklahoma (51-7) sits one win away from its 10th appearance in the Women's College World Series after an 8-2 win over No. 14 Louisiana-Lafayette (46-8) Thursday night at Marita Hynes Field.
The Super Regional features two of the best offenses in the nation, though the teams go about it in different ways.
The Ragin' Cajuns lead the nation in homers and homers per game and got both of their runs via solo shots Thursday night. Oklahoma, meanwhile, is second in the country in batting average and used both the long ball and small ball to pound out a program Super Regional record 14 hits.
OU's No. 1 and 2 hitters, senior Erin Miller and freshman Caleigh Clifton, each collected three hits, while senior Kady Self, sophomore Lea Wodach and freshman Fale Aviu all recorded multi-hit games.
The offense backed up sophomore pitcher Paige Parker, who became just the eighth pitcher to hold the Ragin' Cajuns to two runs or fewer this season. She struck out seven and gave up two runs on six hits and one walk to improve to 32-3 on the season. Remarkably, she's now earned a win in 22 straight appearances.
For the Sooners, it was their 26th win in a row. That puts them three off the school record of 29 set in 2005. Additionally, the victory marked the team's ninth in its last 10 Super Regional home games, outscoring teams 55-12 during that stretch.
Louisiana-Lafayette lost for just the eighth time this season, and six-run loss was the second largest for ULL this year behind a 14-1 loss at No. 1 Florida on April 16. Additionally, Thursday's loss was the first this year for the Ragin' Cajuns when they scored first, dropping their mark to 39-1 in such games.
The series now comes down to Friday night as games two and three (if necessary) will be held in the same evening. First pitch for game two is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN2. Should ULL win, game three would take place at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
Thursday's game got off to an inauspicious start as Louisiana-Lafayette was able to do something that no team had been able to do against the Sooners since March, score in the first inning. On the second pitch of the game, Haley Hayden drove an 0-1 pitch to left-center for her eighth homer of the season. The last team to score in the first against Oklahoma was Nebraska on March 20, a streak of 30 games.
While the Ragin' Cajuns used the long ball, OU countered with small ball to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Miller led off with a bunt single, while Clifton followed with a sac bunt attempt but reached safely when ULL first baseman Kelsey Vincent couldn't handle the throw from pitcher Alex Stewart. Freshman Shay Knighten followed with a single to center field, filling the bases with no one out.
After a foul-out, freshman Fale Aviu tied the game when her grounder reached the hole at shortstop. A strikeout followed, but the Sooners took the lead with senior Kady Self hit a ground ball to nearly the exact same spot as Aviu's, driving in Clifton. Sophomore Lea Wodach batted next and fell behind 1-2 in the count. Despite two strikes, she put down OU's third bunt of the inning and it ran up the third base line. ULL's infielders waited for it to roll foul, but it didn't and Knighten scored to make it 3-1.
The Sooners kept up the offensive pressure in the second, tacking on two more runs on three hits. OU has now outscored teams 140-16 in the first two innings of games this year.
Miller and Clifton got back-to-back singles to start the inning, but Louisiana-Lafayette countered with a pair of fielder's choices to get two quick outs. After driving in the tying run in the first, Aviu came up big again for the Sooners in the second when she laced an 0-1 pitch into the gap in left-center, scoring Knighten from second and freshman Sydney Romero all the way from first.
After lots of offense in the first two innings, neither team scored over the next three frames. There were multiple defensive highlights for OU, though.
A single, fielder's choice and walk put two runners on with just one out for the Ragin' Cajuns in the top of the third, but sophomore Kelsey Arnold fielded a grounder and stepped on second for an inning-ending 6-3 double play.
In the fifth, Kara Gremillion doubled with one out and eventually moved up to third with two outs. Hayden then sent a deep shot to left-center but sophomore center fielder Nicole Pendley covered plenty of ground to make a diving catch on the warning track to save a run and end the inning.
Louisiana-Lafayette eventually ended the scoreless drought in the top of the sixth when Lexie Elkins hit her team-leading 19th home run of the season to left center, cutting OU's lead to 5-2.
Like in the first, OU had a counter-punch to ULL's run, however.
Milled led off with a double to right-center. It was her 21st double of the season, tying for second place in both Big 12 and OU single-season history. Clifton batted next and, on a 1-1 pitch, sent a towering drive over the wall in left field for her fifth homer of the season. After a groundout, Romero uncorked a solo shot to the last row of the bleachers in left for her seventh of the year to put the lead at 8-2.
