May 26, 2016 | Rowing
NORMAN – University of Oklahoma rowing sophomore Katie Ognovich was named to the 2016 CRCA All-Region Team and six Sooners earned CRCA Scholar Athlete status, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced Thursday.
Ognovich, a Greensboro, N.C., native, was one of just 13 student-athletes to be named to the region-three first team and becomes just the fifth Sooner to earn CRCA All-Region honors, bringing Oklahoma's all-time total to eight all-region awards. Ognovich was consistently in the first varsity eight all season, including the 1V8 crew that took second in its division at the Big 12 Championship.
Student-athletes named to the CRCA All-Region Teams are selected based on the evaluation of strength of their team's regional finish, coach recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season. Student-athletes named to the CRCA All-Region Team are eligible for All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships.
In addition to Ognovich's honor, senior Marissa Beene (computer science), junior Stephanie Busse (health and exercise science), senior Reagan Collins (human relations), junior Nicasia D'Allesandro (biology), senior Jenny Franklin (environmental engineering) and junior Taylor Spencer (advertising) were named to the 2016 CRCA Scholar Athlete Team.
The award marks the third consecutive season Beene, who has a 4.0 cumulative GPA, has made the list, and the second recognition for Busse, Collins, D'Allesandro and Spencer.
Student-athletes who achieved the honor were required to have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career and have all eligibility rules defined by her institution, be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility and have rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boats for a minimum of 75 percent of spring races or in a regional conference event.
