NORMAN – No. 5/4 Oklahoma heads into the postseason on a 22-game winning streak after defeating Oklahoma State (29-24, 6-11 Big 12) Saturday afternoon, 5-2. The crowd at Marita Hynes Field was announced at 1,777 on Senior Day, the largest regular season crowd in program history and the second largest overall.
OU closes the regular season with a 47-7 record overall and 17-1 mark in the Big 12 to win the team's fifth conference championship in a row and 13th overall. The 17-1 league record is the best in program history, surpassing 16-2 marks in 2008 and 2014.
Oklahoma's 22-game win streak is the fourth longest in program history. One more win would mark a tie for the second longest win streak, which was achieved during the 2001 and 2007 seasons, while OU remains seven wins away from tying the all-time record of 29 set during 2005.
The Sooners' 22 wins in a row is the longest active streak in the country after Fresno State's 10-7 loss to UNLV Saturday. The Bulldogs had won 22 in a row before their loss.
Oklahoma also ended the regular season on a 15-game win streak in conference play. That's tied for the second longest in OU annals behind a 21-game stretch from April 1, 2001, to April 10, 2002.
Saturday, OU scored all five runs in the first two innings en route to winning its 13th straight game over Oklahoma State and sweeping the Cowgirls for the fifth straight season. OU has won 13 straight in the series, 16 of the past 17 matchups and 19 consecutive matchups in Norman.
The fast start was part of a season-long trend for OU. Oklahoma has now outscored teams 122-15 in the first two frames; and no team has scored in either of the first two innings for the last 24 games against the Sooners.
In the first, freshman Caleigh Clifton walked to extend her on-base streak to 28 games. Fellow freshman Shay Knighten followed with a single, and she moved up to second when the throw came into third to try to nail Clifton.
Freshman Fale Aviu then sent a grounder to short. Clifton broke for home, but Randee O'Donnell came home. Clifton reverted back to third and found herself in a run down. After going back and forth between home and third multiple times, she was able to elude the OSU defense and slide in safely with the game's first run. Freshman Sydney Romero added an RBI groundout, driving in Knighten.
The lead grew to 5-0 in the second thanks to a costly Oklahoma State error.
Senior Kady Self walked and moved to second on an illegal pitch. A double from sophomore Lea Wodach moved Self to third, while a bunt single from sophomore Kelsey Arnold filled the bases. Two batters later, Clifton sent a fly ball to shallow right field. Tiffany Mikkelson charged in on the ball but dropped it, allowing Self to score.
Knighten pushed the score to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Aviu made it 5-0 when she singled back up the middle. All three runs in the inning were unearned.
Senior Kelsey Stevens made it into the fourth inning for OU, pitching 3.1 innings with one strikeout, two walks and one hit allowed.
Freshman Jayden Chesntnut entered with out in the fourth and was responsible for the two OSU runs in the fifth off a two-run single by Madi Sue Montgomery. Chestnut recorded 1.1 innings pitched and allowed those two runs on two hits and two walks.
Sophomore Paige Parker got the final out of the fifth and then proceeded to close out the final two innings. She allowed one batter to reach on a walk, but did not give up a run or hit. She earned the win for an 18th straight appearance and is now 28-3 on the season.
Parker hasn't given up an earned run in 30.1 straight innings and just two in her last 48.0 frames (0.29 ERA).
The Sooners learn their postseason fate Sunday night when the bracket is unveiled at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
