NORMAN – University of Oklahoma coaches K.J. Kindler, Sherri Coale and Patty Gasso have been recognized as three of the 30 most influential women in college sports by the Sports Management Degree Guide.
Among the 20 active Division I head coaches selected, Oklahoma is home to three of them. Kindler is ranked No. 15, while Coale and Gasso are slotted No. 19 and No. 20, respectively.
Since her arrival in Norman, Kindler has built one of the nation's most elite women's gymnastics programs. In her 10 seasons at OU, Kindler has led the program to five NCAA Super Six team finals appearances, the 2014 national championship and eight Big 12 titles. The Sooners have made the NCAA Championships each year under Kindler, who has been named NCAA Coach of the Year twice and the Big 12 Coach of the Year 10 times.
A native of Healdton, Okla., Coale has guided the women's basketball program to unparalleled success in her 20 seasons at Oklahoma. She has led the Sooners to three Final Fours, four Big 12 Tournament championships and six Big 12 regular season titles, and helped OU make 17 straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament — a run that ranks as the fifth-longest active streak in the nation. Coale, one of seven active head coaches to lead their program to at least three Final Fours, will be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in June.
After growing up in Torrance, Calif., and playing softball at California State University, Long Beach, Gasso began her coaching career at nearby Long Beach City College, ultimately leading it to an impressive record of 161-59-1. Since then, Gasso has spent 22 seasons coaching the women's softball team at OU. She has compiled a record of 1,058-312-2 and a winning percentage of .772 — the seventh highest active mark and ninth highest all-time. Gasso's teams have advanced to the Women's College World Series nine times and won the national championship in 2000 and 2013. She has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year eight times.
