NORMAN – A season-high four home runs, including two by freshman Fale Aviu, sparked No. 14/13 Oklahoma (11-4) to a 9-0, five-inning win over Dartmouth (2-6) in game one of Saturday's home-opening doubleheader in Norman, Okla.
The victory continued Oklahoma's impressive performances in home openers. All-time, the Sooners are 38-8 in home openers, and since Marita Hynes Field opened in 1998, they are 19-0. OU has won 22 straight home openers and 27 of its past 28 such contests.
In fact, Oklahoma has now won its past six home openers by a combined score of 51-0. Saturday's attendance was 1,208, making it the largest home-opening crowd in Marita Hynes Field history.
Of Oklahoma's nine hits, seven went for extra bases as the team hit three doubles in addition to its four home runs.
All of the offense came in support of freshman Jayden Chestnut, who was making the first start of her career. The Mustang, Okla., native gave up just two hits as she threw her first career shutout.
The Sooners had yet to figure out Dartmouth starter Morgan McCalmon through the first six batters of the game, but they used a two-out rally to take a 2-0 lead.
Senior Kady Self collected OU's first hit of the game when she lifted a single to right center. Aviu then brought her home by going to opposite field with a two-run home run to left field.
Another two-out, two-run homer in the third doubled Oklahoma's lead.
With one out, sophomore Kelsey Arnold singled to left field to extend her career best hitting streak to seven games. Two batters later, fellow sophomore Lea Wodach pulled an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left field for her team-leading fifth home run of the season. Wodach's home run also pushed her hitting streak to a career best eight games.
Aviu was at it again in the fourth, sending a no-doubt home run clear of the facility in right field. Coming in a 1-1 count, Aviu's third homer of the season scored Self, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Needing just two runs to end the game early for its fifth run-rule win of the season, the Sooners put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman Shay Knighten got things started with a double to right center. She then stole third and came home to score on an errant throw by the Dartmouth catcher. Wodach walked after Knighten scored, and senior Erin Miller ended the game when she drove the first pitch she saw into the bleachers in right center for her third home run of the season.
Miller, Self and Aviu each had two hits in the game, while Self, Aviu and Wodach each scored twice. The four runs batted in for Aviu were a career high.
