NORMAN – The 14th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team cruised to a dominant 4-0 win over Wichita State on Tuesday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center. Playing indoors due to high winds, OU won the doubles point and then took three singles wins to secure the victory.
“In a match like that you want to go out and do your job and not get yourself into any trouble. We did that across the board so it was a good day for us.”
- Head Coach John Roddick
“We played well,” head coach John Roddick said. “In a match like that you want to go out and do your job and not get yourself into any trouble. We did that across the board so it was a good day for us.”
Oklahoma opened the dual with a dominant performance in doubles. On court one, senior Axel Alvarez and junior Andrew Harris used overpowering serves to topple Jocelyn Devilliers and Austin Williams, 6-4.
Just seconds after OU's top duo clinched its match, junior Alex Ghilea and sophomore Spencer Papa grabbed a win of their own at No. 2 doubles. Ghilea and Papa broke the serve of No. 42 Miroslav Herzan and Harue Inoue at 5-3 to take the win and clinch the doubles point for Oklahoma.
“We haven't played poorly in doubles,” Roddick said. “When we've lost doubles points it's been to good teams just about every time. Just going out and taking care of business like we did today is good to see.”
Leading 1-0 after doubles, the Sooners needed just three wins in singles to take the dual. OU would get the needed wins early.
Freshman Max Mora delivered the Sooners' first singles win of the day. Mora dominated the first set of his match with Vitor Mendez, winning 6-0, and then rode that momentum to a 6-2 mark in the second. The freshman improves to 9-5 on the year.
The Sooners' next two points came just moments apart. On court one, Alvarez picked up his 113th career singles win, topping Herzan 7-5, 6-0. Alvarez broke Herzan just once in the first set, at 5-5, but dominated the second, shutting out his opponent. The Sooners' ace is now just two singles wins away from tying Oliver Lorin's program record for career singles wins. On court two, Papa clinched the dual for Oklahoma with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Devilliers. Papa's victory completed a match that saw OU win in just over an hour and a half without giving up a single set.
The Sooners have a quick turn around this weekend as they hit the road for a pair of matches in the Sunshine State. OU will take on No. 17 South Florida on Friday, April 1 at 2 p.m. CT and then face No. 22 Florida State on Sunday, April 3 at 11 a.m. CT. OU's match with Florida State will be streamed live on ESPN3.
“We've had a couple guys that are really playing better so hopefully we can keep that momentum going,” Roddick said. “Spencer has played great recently and so has Alex. Axel has had some good matches and Florin is playing a little bit better. I think across the board there are signs of us playing better. If we can keep doing that I think we can have a pair of good matches this weekend.”
